In, the episode titled “Spencer,” Spencer Reid finds himself behind bars after he was arrested in Mexico with severe charges for drugs along with murder charges against Rosa Medina. Turns out, her real name was Nadie Ramos. Given how Ramos had dual citizenship in the U.S. and Mexico, Reid had to transport back to the states to be sentenced.
However, the FBI refused to come to Reid’s rescue as he did not tell them about his trips to Mexico which was against the protocol. Reid’s problems increased after it was revealed that his mother has been kidnapped by two unsubs to have a notorious connection to Reid’s past. Reid’s troubles turned all the more twisted after it was revealed that one of the most notorious criminals weaved the entire crime.

Will Reid Return in Criminal Minds: Evolution?
While fans have been curious to know what led to Reid’s absence from the spinoff show, Criminal Minds: Evolution, it seems like his absence was addressed pretty soon.
It seems like makers have been dropping hints about Reid’s absence after Deputy Director Bailey was seen saying Reid’s current whereabouts are classified. This does open doors for the character’s possible return in the spinoff series.
Series regular cast members, Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney reprised their roles, as Spencer and Matt respectively. However, series show-runner Erica Messer explained that it is a little bit of a mystery what Reid and Simmons are up to, but she assured fans that they are certainly not forgotten. Is Spencer Reid Returning to Criminal Minds?
Series showrunner Erica Messer has cleared the air while revealing the real reason for Gubler’s absence from Criminal Minds: Evolution. Erica explained that the absence is due to scheduling conflicts. Erica Messer confmridnthat Gubler was not being able to be there during the filming period that was scheduled by Paramount+ so the makers had to move forward without him.
However, fans are still hopeful as Spencer Reid is still a part of the FBI specialized unit, which implies that the genius doctor can reclaim his place anytime he wants. Given how his character has not been killed off, his return is very much possible in the Paramount reboot. Criminal Minds: Evolution might have planned Reid’s return in the coming episodes.
Series makers have stated that they hope that the team members they ended the series with on CBS will be able to come back and play at some point but also pointed out the fact that everybody does have other projects and as they started shooting in August and wrapped in December, it was a short window to try to get all of their cast members to come on board.
