Vera Season 12 Episode 2: Recap
In the previous episode that was aired on February 5th, 2023, we see a bride-to-be spotting a man lying in the trash. Once DCI Stanhope arrives at the scene, she finds the dead man, identified to be Connail Burns, being beaten and strangled to death.
The forensics expert indicates that he might have been attacked twice, with the criminals first beating him up black and blue and, after 2 hours or so, showing up to finish him off. Considering the time in between, Vera guesses that the attacks could have been done by two different people.
She contacts Connail’s sister, who informs her about his wife, Kate, and daughter, Bailey. When Vera talks to them, she finds out that Conn had built up a debit once he was back from the military. She goes to the place he was seen working at, which was The Chivvy Centre operated by Steve Wilson. Vera sees Steve acting weird but doesn’t suspect him. She talks to Benny, a homeless man that knew Conn.
After finding out more about the situation, Vera meets up with Tony Castillo, a man who was set to buy a room along with Conn. He runs off without saying anything. Going through his military record, Vera finds out that Conn had been traumatized by what happened during his work there. Asides from the tragic deaths, he also witnessed one of his close friends’ death, who was accused of a theft he had never committed. A woman named Rae is also involved, who used to be like his daughter since she was the same age as bailey.
Rae had been assaulted by her landlord, and Conn could have stepped in to be her defense. The reason for Connail Burns’s death could now be linked to three things, Steve Wilson, Tony, or Rae’s landlord. After all the puzzle pieces are put together, they find out that the people who beat up Conn were Rae’s landlord, but the person who finished him off was Kate’s partner, Liz. She was jealous of Conn and wanted him to disappear from Kate and Bailey’s life.
