The story of the Twinkling Watermelon revolves around high school boy Eun Gyeol, who pursues a great interest in music. During the day time, he is an annoying topper student in the class, and at night, he rocks as a guitarist in their small music band. The story takes a funny turn when Eun Gyeol time travels to 1995 after entering a vintage music store.
In 1995, he encountered his father, Yi Chan, who was a high schooler in 1995s. Yi Chan thinks of him as a mad person on their first meeting. Eun Gyeol calls him “Dad [appa].” Just to a worse situation, Eun Gyeol finds out that his father has a crush on a cellist named Se Kyeong but not his mother.
Eun Gyeol decides to put the couple how they are supposed to be, but meanwhile, he is also concerned that he will be stuck forever in 1995 and never get to return to 2023.

The last episode spins off with the backstory of Eun Gyeol and how he joins the band. Eun Gyeol would always wear masks and hats and give his guitar performance, which would be enjoyed by plenty number of audiences.
Seeing him play so well, the band member of Spine 9, a local band, approaches him to join their band. Even tho Eun Gyeol declines the offer, at first, they give him a track CD and tell him to prepare his own kind of guitar melody, which they will audition for after a few days.
After a lot of thinking, Eun Gyeol gave the track a listen and couldn’t stop himself from joining the band. However, he keeps some conditions in return, like he will wear a mask always, he is a student, so he can’t come at the desired time, and so on.
Meanwhile, in 1995, Yi Chan asked his friend to get all the information on the popular girl in the school, Se Kyeong, on whom everyone has a crush. His friend gives tells him the background of Se Kyeong. She came from an elite family. She is talented, disciplined, and sophisticated.
Most importantly, she already has a boyfriend. Practically, both are engaged, and their families meet once a month. His friend warns him to give up already. But silly Yi Chan climbs up the wall and sneaks into the party to see Se Kyeong.
Se Kyeong, after giving the performance, takes him to the corner as an excuse for giving the money for the ice cream she bought that day. Se Kyeong pleads with him to give up on her because otherwise, he will be considered a stalker by her family, and something serious can happen, too.
