K-pop junkies sure had a field day with this one. It’s been established that K-pop has been taking the world by storm for a few years now, so much so that it has made its way into Travis Scott’s discography. Sort of, at least. Surprising? Yes. Concerning? Not really. Maybe because it ended up having nothing to do with Korean pop music.
Puzzling as it may have been, it had been revealed that Travis Scott’s newest single would be named ‘KPOP’ and that it would feature globally adored artists The Weeknd and Bad Bunny! Although this news initiated mixed reactions from multiple fanbases, we have to admit it brings forth a kind of excitement when we hear news of Western artists associating with K-pop. Especially the ones we never expect, like Travis Scott!
The long-awaited track was finally released on July 21st, 2023, unveiling the mystery behind its controversial name at last.
It proved to be pretty anticlimactic because it was revealed to have no actual references to Korean music. Just like the response to the song title reveal, many netizens had mixed reactions to the actual song too. Keep scrolling to know more about the title, listeners’ reactions, and the specifics of the release of Travis Scott’s much-awaited album ‘Utopia’!

Now, what does the song really talk about? Is it a diss track? Is it a tribute to K-pop? Disappointing as it may be, the song talks about Ketamine lollipops, not the brilliant form of entertainment that is K-pop. Travis Scott, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, BNYX®, Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet, Illangelo & Dougie F are the writers of this song, and the lyrics are, safe to say, pointing in the direction of love, seduction, sensuality, and passion and is just an all-around sexy song.
The meaning of title KPOP refers to the protagonist’s time spent with a girl while he was under the intoxication of Ketamine lollipops, specifically the time when he was physically intimate with her. Oral Transmucosal ketamine is a drug given to children before surgery, made into lollipops to enable skeptical children to consume with ease. The red lollipop makes its appearance multiple times in the video too.

The title reveal of the song in itself had mixed reviews. It set a few K-pop fans off, with it initiating claims that Travis is clout chasing and that they expected the song to be offensive. A lot of the rest of the audience was excited to hear that Travis would maybe be releasing a track with K-pop references. As expected, fan reactions were all over the place when it came to the actual song release. To some, this is set to be the song of the year, but to others, the song is a little too explicit.
“You know I’m high off that K pop
Rubbin’ up on your body
All your clothes, you gon’ take off.”
These lyrics are an example of why some may find it explicit but to each their own. Many find the song to be spectacular and have already found a spot for the song in their playlists. Many are still of the opinion that the title was a cheap stunt to build up hype around the song for it to perform well. Ah, well, you can’t please everybody!
