Levi Ackerman is probably one of the most famous anime characters of all time in Attack on Titan and, in general, the anime world. He is the Special Operations Squad captain (an elite team he chose himself to protect Eren Yeager) under the Survey Corps and is widely regarded as humanity’s strongest soldier. Despite his outward appearance, he cares immensely for his team and has never underestimated human life. He is also notoriously clean. Because he frowns or is expressionless most of the time, people have trouble gauging what he is thinking due to his extremely calm demeanor.
Levi is the most powerful non-Titan character in the AOT universe. No wonder he stands out whenever it comes to finishing off the titans. His incredible combat flair quick strategic thinking makes him an opponent no one would want to face. Even though Levi is not the protagonist of AOT, he still gets enough spotlight to shine on his own. Levi is considered to be one of the few anime characters who over time became more popular and loved than the main character (like Killua and Gon in Hunter x Hunter). The fact that Levi belongs to the Ackerman clan, he has been able to discover a dormant power within himself.
1. In his early days, Levi was a thief
All those who have watched Attack on Titan were quite surprised when it is revealed that Levi used to be a thief. He is taken in by Kenny Ackerman, who was later revealed to be his uncle (his mother’s brother). Levi was a thief until he was captured and as a punishment for his crimes he and his two other aides Isabel and Furlan were sent to the Survey Corps.
2. Levi Ackerman is much older than he looks
Another interesting fact about Levi Ackerman is that he’s much older than we can imagine. When we saw Levi almost, everyone would have guessed that he was only a few years older than Eren. One might even say that Levi is in his 20s. But recently in an interview Hajime Isayama (manga artist who created AOT) revealed that Levi is in his mid-30s.
3. Levi’s personality is based on Rorschach from the Watchmen tv series
In an interview in 2014, Isayama revealed that he created Levi after watching the Watchmen. Isayama further said that he wanted to create a character inspired by Rorschach, which can explain Levi’s short height, jaw-dropping combat skills, and the white ascot on his neck.
4. Levi used to hate Commander Erwin
Many fans will find this Levi Ackerman fact somewhat hard to believe. Yes, there was a time when Levi used to hate Erwin. Although throughout the series Levi and Erwin have been shown to have a relationship based on years of loyalty and trust towards each other, things were not this way when they first met. When Erwin caught Levi and his friends stealing, he forced them to join the Survey Corps. This infuriated Levi so much that he even vowed to kill Erwin.
5. Levi became close friends with those outside his squad
Although it is unusual for Levi to befriend anyone easily still he made good friends with some people towards the end of the manga. Surprisingly, in the epilogue of the manga, he spends time with Onyankopon, Gabi, and Falco rather than being with those who were in his squad. This is an absolute surprise for everyone given their history and especially the fact that Levi did not even know these characters for most of the series.
6. Levi was born on 25th December
This fact about Levi Ackerman is not known by many of the fans. His birthday falls on a precious holiday. It’s unknown whether they celebrate Christmas in the Attack on Titan universe or not, but for fans, 25th December is not just Christmas day but Santa Levi’s birthday as well.
7. Levi suffers from insomnia
Yes, you heard it right. Our very favorite Levi Ackerman suffers from insomnia. We can often see him sleeping on a chair in the same clothes. Levi, being a part of the Survey Corps, often goes outside the walls for various missions. It is fair that humanity’s strongest soldier has seen some really disturbing things which may or may not be the reason for his insomnia, but it is confirmed that the Captain is struggling with insomnia.
8. Levi likes drinking tea very much
We all have seen the unique way in which Levi holds his cup while drinking tea. Levi likes drinking tea a lot, and this is even confirmed by Isayama. Ackerman is a very big fan of tea and even makes sure that tea is a part of the shipment coming in. Levi even dreams of opening a tea shop, a fact not so surprising given his fondness for the drink.
