Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will modernize the original 1996 adventure, but its developers say the remake must preserve the moments that made the classic memorable. The upcoming game is being developed by Flying Wild Hog and Crystal Dynamics, with the team balancing updated gameplay and visuals against the emotional impact of Lara Croft’s original journey.
Speaking to Edge magazine, Flying Wild Hog creative director Michał Kuk explained that developers focused on the experiences players remember most strongly rather than recreating every detail exactly as it appeared in the original.
“Your brain remembers the things that generated the most emotions for you,”
Kuk said. He added that memorable “moments, locations, vistas, objects” must remain “almost untouched” in the remake.

Unlike a near-identical remake, Legacy of Atlantis reimagines the 1996 game with modern presentation and gameplay systems. The approach has attracted criticism from some fans, particularly over additions such as crafting and skill trees, which were not part of the original experience.
However, the developers believe preserving the defining moments matters more than copying every mechanic. The goal is to make the adventure feel familiar to longtime fans while introducing it to a new generation of players.
Crystal Dynamics experience director Jeff Adams also acknowledged that some original mechanics are difficult to justify in a more realistic game. He cited finding a med pack inside a tomb sealed for 10,000 years as an example of a detail the team is reconsidering.
The challenge is preserving the original’s atmosphere without carrying over every dated design choice. The team’s approach suggests that Legacy of Atlantis will retain the iconic discoveries and locations players remember while adapting smaller details to fit its modern design.
