The Odyssey Reclaims No. 1 at Global Box Office, Overtaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has returned to the top of the global box office during its eighth weekend in theaters. The epic earned $45.9 million internationally and domestically combined over the latest weekend, narrowly surpassing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which brought in $44.1 million.

The result marks another major milestone for Nolan’s Homer adaptation, which has now crossed $1.6 billion worldwide. It also makes The Odyssey the filmmaker’s highest-grossing movie to date, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its extraordinary theatrical run with more than $2.4 billion worldwide.

The Odyssey Takes Back the Global Box Office Lead

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Odyssey collected $45.9 million during its eighth weekend, giving it a narrow $1.8 million advantage over Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The two blockbusters have dominated the worldwide box office for much of the summer, with the Marvel film previously holding the top position for six consecutive weeks.

The latest result further strengthens The Odyssey as one of 2026’s biggest theatrical successes. Its $1.6 billion worldwide haul places it among the highest-grossing films in history and makes it Christopher Nolan’s most commercially successful movie, surpassing the lifetime grosses of his previous blockbusters.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached approximately $2.4 billion worldwide. The Tom Holland-led Marvel sequel currently ranks among the three highest-grossing films ever, demonstrating that both movies have become major contributors to an exceptionally strong year for theatrical releases.

The battle between The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day could change with the arrival of Practical Magic 2. The Warner Bros. sequel is scheduled to begin its international rollout on September 9 before opening in North America on September 10 and 11, depending on market.

Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Practical Magic 2 returns to the story of the Owens sisters nearly three decades after the original movie. The sequel follows Sally and Gillian as they confront a new threat connected to their family’s magical legacy, with Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the returning cast.

The broader 2026 box office has also benefited from the success of films beyond these two blockbusters. According to the Associated Press, the domestic summer box office reached roughly $4.61 billion, marking the strongest summer performance since 2013.

With Practical Magic 2 now entering theaters, the next weekend could determine whether The Odyssey maintains its newly recovered global lead or another major release finally breaks the summer’s two-film dominance.
