The Nun 2 Ending Explained
Nun 2 picks up with four years since Valak escaped from Romania after possessing Frenchie, a handyman with the agenda of getting Saint Lucy’s eyes for himself. In 1956, Jacques and Father Noiret are completing their daily chores in Tarascon’s church before Father Noiret is set on fire while rising into the air and getting burned to death.
Jacques panicked, freezes on the spot, and watches Noiret burn while holding his rosary. Sister Irene now lives in solitary in Italy after the events of Saint Cartha’s monastery.
Sister Irene has maintained her beliefs even though she witnessed the darkness none of her fellow sisters could imagine. Meanwhile, Maurice has also moved on from everything he experienced in Romania and works as a groundskeeper for a boarding school in France.
Maurice has developed a close friendship with a girl named Sophie and Kate, Sophie’s mother and a teacher at the school. While Maurice continues to work at the school, a dark figure seems to arrive, and it is hinted that the figure has a connection with Maurice. Valak makes his presence known, dressed as the demonic nurse after a child, making a delivery nearby, and sees a possessed Maurice, and he viciously attacks the child.
The higher-ups ask Irene to investigate a series of deaths across Europe, including nuns and pastors. The following day, she sees Frenchie asking her to save his life. Irene, accompanied by Sister Debra, a noviciate, travels to Tarascon, a small town in France where Father Noiret was set on fire. A young boy witnessed the death of Father Noiret and gave his rosary to Irene before informing her about everything he witnessed.
Irene and sister Debra notice a symbol on the rosary resembling the picture on the rosaries of other dead priests. The pair travel to the Catholic archives, where an informant tells them about the symbol resembling Saint Lucy’s eyes, a patron whom Pagans killed. Soon, Irene realizes the Valak is after the sacred Saint Lucy’s eyes, which are hidden at a monastery.
The monastery, the boarding school Sophie is studying at, and Maurice’s workplace. Meanwhile, Sophie gets bullied by her school peers and locked up in an abandoned chapel.
A librarian in Palais des Papes informs Irene and Debra that the demon they are looking for is an angel rejected by God. The librarian also tells the pair that the emblem on the rosary is the St. Lucy’s family crest. St. Lucy’s family stole her eyes as she didn’t die when they set her on fire.
As Maurice becomes more possessed, Irene and Debra arrive at the boarding school at the right time. Maurice is in distress regarding Kate and Sophie when Irene arrives, with Debra to inform Maurice about Valak being inside of him.
After learning about Valak possessing him, Maurice is heartbroken before the demon takes over his body and attacks Irene and Debra before he is knocked unconscious.
While keeping a possessed Maurice at bay, Irene and Debra search for Saint Lucy’s eyes before Kate shows them the game her classmate forced her to play. Using a flashlight, Debra makes the goat’s eyes glow red, which points in the direction where the sacred St. Lucy eyes are buried.
Does Irene Finally End Valak?
Debra and Kate separate from Sophie and Irene to protect the schoolgirls from a demon goat. Maurice, under Valak’s possession, escapes after knocking Kate out before attacking Irene, while Sophie runs for her life with the relic.
Valak starts to chase Sophie after the relic glows in her hands, thus making the tower crumble. Irene and Debra rush to help Sophie. Thus, the group reunites together and starts to pray together.
Irene starts to use the relic against Frenchie until the possessed Maurice manages to hold it himself. Maurice lifts Irene in the air while setting her on fire, but she doesn’t burn, and it gets revealed that she, with Sophie and Debra, are the descendants of St. Lucy. Debra and Irene continue to pray together while Valak is in beast mode.
Irene sees wine spilling on the grounds and realizes that one can turn wine into the blood of Christ through prayer. Debra and Irene turn the wine into the blood of Christ and use it to send Valak back to hell. It seems like Valak is separated from Maurice, but as we all know, Maurice had to get exorcised by Warrens.
The film ends with Maurice admiring the tomatoes he grew from the seed given by Irene. Maurice has become a family with Kate and Sophie. Valak doesn’t die but lays a doormat inside Maurice until he sees an opportunity to rise again.
