The Good Doctor S05E04 Recap
Episode 4 saw Shaun dealing with a self-taught father of a patient. The patient is a girl who’s suffering from abdominal problems. Salen allows the father of the girl, Walt, to act as a consultant on the case. This, of course, doesn’t go down well with Shaun, who objects to his involvement. He cites his lack of a medical degree to be the reason he shouldn’t be consulting. Initially, Walt’s suggestions and ideas prove right, leading other doctors to take them seriously. Meanwhile, it only rubs Shaun off the wrong way. Walt’s ideas and involvement get on his nerves. Eventually, he bursts into anger and flips out. Dr. Andrews kicks him off the case.
Shaun then also confronts Salen about the billboard. However, when he meets the girl, she tells him she chose him because of the billboard. Shaun realizes he was wrong. He also realizes he must be wrong about her father as well. He shares this with Lea when he has an epiphany. Cracking the answer to the girl’s problems, he rushed off to stop the ongoing surgery. He pitches a new procedure that will avoid taking out the girl’s entire large intestine. Shaun’s ideas include Walt’s suggestions as well. The surgery is a success.

The patient doesn’t want treatment.
Promo Breakdown
From the official promo for episode 5, we learn of the reason behind his refusal to get treatment. His daughter tells Dr. Park that her father is a strong man. He puts on a brave face and keeps the bravado in order to deny the reality of the discriminatory treatment that he faces only because of his race. If he keeps up this bravado, however, he will have to pay with his life. He is in desperate need of surgery to repair his jaw. However, he is stubbornly refusing to undergo surgery. His daughter will try and talk him out of it, to be vulnerable again and save himself.
We later see his condition getting rather serious and the doctors rushing him to emergency care. His daughter expresses her fear that once he learns she chose surgery for him, he’ll hate her. Shaun tells her that it’s not him liking or hating her that matters now, it’s saving his life that does. Meanwhile, we’ll also see Lea sneakily try and raise Shaun’s negative patient satisfaction scores.
