The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Switch 2 Physical Edition Sells Out at Launch as Full Cartridge Draws Strong Demand

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has quickly become difficult to find in physical form following its Nintendo Switch 2 launch on August 11. Several major retailers reportedly showed the physical edition as unavailable around release, giving collectors another example of strong demand for games that include the complete experience on a cartridge.

The situation is particularly notable because Bethesda chose to put the full game on the Switch 2 cartridge rather than use Nintendo’s Game-Key Card format. That means owners of the physical release can play the game from the cartridge without needing to download the entire 60GB-plus title first. Bethesda also confirmed the Switch 2 version’s physical Deluxe Edition includes the game’s major expansions and additional downloadable content.

Why the Oblivion Remastered Cartridge Is in Demand

The physical release has become especially appealing to Switch 2 owners because many large third-party games on the system use Game-Key Cards. Those products look like conventional cartridges but require an internet connection to download the actual game data.

Oblivion Remastered takes a different approach. The Switch 2 version is a substantial release, with Nintendo listing a download size of 57.7GB for the digital version, while the physical edition carries the game itself.

The physical Deluxe Edition also includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, along with additional content such as Fighter’s Stronghold, Mehrune’s Razor and the Horse Armor Pack. This makes the cartridge particularly attractive to collectors who want a more complete version of Bethesda’s RPG preserved physically.

The shortage does not necessarily mean Bethesda produced only a small number of copies; however. Retail availability can vary by region and store, and some reports indicate that copies have remained available at individual locations despite broader online stock shortages.

The release also arrives amid growing debate about physical games. Nintendo continues to support physical Switch releases, while Sony has announced plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. That makes the strong interest in Oblivion Remastered notable for collectors who want games that remain playable directly from physical media.
