Sony Interactive Entertainment has reaffirmed that it has no plans to reverse its decision to end production of physical PlayStation game discs, despite weeks of criticism from fans. During the company’s Q1 FY2026 financial results presentation, Sony executives addressed the controversy directly, explaining that the move reflects changing consumer habits rather than a short-term business decision.

The announcement comes as a vocal section of the PlayStation community continues to criticize the company over concerns about game ownership, preservation, and the future of physical media.

Sony Says Digital Gaming Drove the Decision

Responding to questions during the earnings presentation, Sony CFO Lin Tao explained that the company spent considerable time evaluating the transition before making its decision.

According to Tao:

“There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing.”

He added that the trend extends beyond gaming and affects entertainment as a whole.

“We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this… and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.”

Although Sony remains committed to its strategy, Tao recognized the emotional attachment many players have to physical games.

He said:

“Games are loved by many people… it’s connected to people’s fond memories, in many cases. And so we understand those emotions.”

Tao added that Sony intends to continue exploring how it can strengthen its relationship with players as the PlayStation ecosystem becomes increasingly digital.

The comments come after widespread criticism from collectors and preservation advocates, many of whom argue that physical copies offer long-term ownership benefits, resale opportunities, and protection against potential digital storefront changes.

Sony’s previous corporate reports indicate that physical discs represented only around 3% of PlayStation game sales in 2024, highlighting how rapidly consumer purchasing habits have shifted toward digital downloads.

Digital distribution offers conveniences such as preloading games before launch, instant access on release day, and eliminating the need to swap discs between titles. However, critics argue that digital-only purchases limit resale options and reduce consumer ownership rights.

Despite online campaigns calling for boycotts and a planned community “economic and gameplay blackout,” Sony’s latest comments suggest the company considers the transition irreversible. Instead of revisiting the decision, Sony now appears focused on maintaining player trust while continuing its long-term digital strategy.
