Soft And Quiet Ending Explained:
The film begins with Emily, a schoolteacher having a mental breakdown in the bathroom after she discovers she isn’t pregnant at the moment. Following her breakdown, Emily composes herself as she waits for the arrival of the parents of a little boy, one of her students.
Emily encourages the young boy to berate the school’s janitor, who is a man of color, and when confronted, she tells the young boy to lie about the janitor hurting him while he is cleaning up.
After Bryan’s mother picks him up from the school gate, Emily begins to walk through the woods with a pie in her hands. On her way to the church meeting, Emily has a chance encounter with Leslie, as she was recommended by her employer to join the meeting.
Emily continues her way to the church meeting being held on the church’s first floor. The agenda behind conducting the meeting is revealed the moment Emily uncovers the pie she was carrying that has a swastika sign made on its top.
The other members present at the meeting begin making jokes and laughing at the Swastika. The meeting is revealed to be the first Daughter Of Aryan Unity meeting organized by Emily. The daughter of Aryan Unity is revealed to be an organization of white supremacist women, including Leslie, an ex-convict, Kim, a grocery store owner, and Majorie, a retail worker.
The organization members have several issues with people of color, immigrants, Jews, feminists, and inclusion policies. The women present in the meeting starts to become emotional while they share their personal experiences of being treated differently than others.
The women in the meeting decide to bear as many children as they can to stop their race from becoming a minority. Marjorie believes the promotion she should have received for her hard work was given to a Colombian co-worker to promote diversity. She does not see the flaws in herself.
The first agenda of the organization was revealed to be to find men with similar beliefs and set them up with the single ladies in the group. The discussion of the group is cut short after the pastor arrives and makes them leave.
To save her face, Emily invites the member of the organization to her house for further discussions. Majorie, Kim, and Leslie agree to go to Emily’s house for further discussion. Before going to Emily’s house, the woman decides to pick a wine and some essentials to enjoy while at Emily’s house. The woman enters Kim’s store to pick out the wine.
Kim denies her services to the two Asian-American women who arrived after them. Lily confronts Kim for denying services, at the situation escalates when Kim holds the two women at gunpoint. As the sisters leave, Lily taunts Emily about her brother serving time in a correction facility for rape. Craig, Emily’s husband, arrives at the scene and tries to diffuse the situation, but an intoxicated Leslie is adamant about taking the group to the sister’s house and vandalizing it.
Craig is against the vandalism but gets forced by his wife, Emily, to tag along with them. Once the group arrives at the sister’s house, they vandalize their property, and as they are about to destroy Anne’s passport, the sisters return home.
The confused group binds and gags the two sisters while Kim holds a gun at their heads. Craig leaves the scene unable to handle the reality of his wife being a cruel individual. The group of four ladies decides to weigh their options and finally come to a conclusion to remove physical evidence and intimidate the sisters into keeping their mouths shut.
Things take a turn for the worse when Lily accidentally dies after Leslie and Marjorie begin to force-feed her. As it turns out, Lily was allergic to peanuts, and the group failed to find the epi-pen in time. This leads the group members to fight against each other, but in the end, they decide to make it look like rape to avoid the suspicion of a female doing the vandalism.
Leslie forcefully penetrates Anne with a carrot while the remaining group members cleanse the crime scene. The four women then tie the bodies of the two sisters in the trash bag and dump the bags overboard in the middle of the ocean.
Did Anne Survive The Abuse?
As soon as the four women leave on their boat Anne frees herself, and her head emerges out of the ocean water, thus giving the viewers the relief of one of the sisters surviving to get the four intruders punished for their heinous crimes. As it is obvious that the four women will return to Anne and Lily’s house to wipe their fingerprints and remove any sign of a crime-talking place, thus the viewers hope that they will stay there till the police arrive.
The message behind Anne’s surviving and her face emerging from the water resembled a ray of hope that one needs to have to continue living life.
Anne’s survival resembles the strength that the marginalized population possesses so as to continue chasing their dreams even after everything they face, including racism, hate crimes, etc. Soft and Quiet emphasized that even amidst adversity, there is always hope for justice to prevail. Soft and Quiet ended on a positive note.
