This theatre is one of the prominent and oldest theatres that are still in use, built back in the 16th century, while other theatres were built in the same lane. This lively theatre which was never vacant after its construction, has a long history of 400 years as it was developed 3 times after its initial construction.
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, was first built in the year 1663 by Thomas Killebrew which was constructed under King Charles II’s Royal Charter. Even though the building construction of the first Theatre Royal, Drury Lane was top-notch, it did not remain the same for a longer period of time.
In the year 1672, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, unfortunately, caught fire, which resulted in the total destruction of the theatre. So it was reconstructed again after 9 years, and after that, show performances began getting conducted in the theatre.
During the 117 years of time period before the theatre’s third construction, many of the prominent musical and play performers such as Thomas Betterton, Charles Macklin, and David Garrick performed on the stage, and in the year 1794, the theatre was rebuilt again for its development and expansion to for in 3600 people in the 4-floor building.
Unfortunately, again in 1812, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane was turned into ashes because of the fatal fire but was immediately redesigned by Benjamin Wyatt. Since 1812, many of the musicals, and other performances have been happening in Theatre Royal and it has not been reconstructed since then. Some retouches have been given to some parts of the theatre but the designers never compromised on keeping the authenticity of the building.
In the last 100 years various musicals, movies, and shows such as Cinderella (1919), Rose Marie (1924), A Chorus Line (1976), Showboat (1928), Oklahoma! (1947) Camelot (1964), A Fair Lady (2001), The Witches Of Eastwick (2001), Oliver! (2009), Shrek The Musical (2011), and the current musical Frozen have been performed uncountable times.
