The Story So Far: How Earth Became a Frozen Wasteland

Snowball Earth begins in 2025, when Earth is invaded by giant alien creatures. Humanity fights back using a powerful robot named Yukio, piloted by Tetsuo Yabusame. Although Tetsuo manages to survive the final battle, Yukio is destroyed, and he drifts through space in cold sleep for eight years.

When Tetsuo finally returns to Earth, he discovers that the planet has completely changed. The world is now covered in ice and snow, and humanity has all but disappeared. Determined to uncover the truth, Tetsuo sets out to learn what happened to Earth while keeping the final promise he made to Yukio.

How Snowball Earth Became One of Manga’s Standout Sci-Fi Series

The fast renewal of the Snowball Earth anime highlights the strong reputation of its original manga. Written and illustrated by Yuhiro Tsujitsugu, the manga has been serialized in Shogakukan’s Monthly Big Comic Spirits since January 2021. It has also received praise from some of Japan’s biggest creators, including Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding), and ONE (One-Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100).

Their endorsements appeared on the covers of the manga’s first three Japanese volumes, helping Snowball Earth gain attention long before its anime adaptation.

During the Spring 2026 anime season, Snowball Earth earned praise from both fans and critics as one of the season’s standout sci-fi anime. With Season 2 now officially confirmed, the series looks set to continue building on that success.
