Neil Druckmann has clarified his relationship with HBO’s The Last of Us Season 3, confirming that neither he nor Naughty Dog played a creative role in shaping the upcoming episodes. The comments further establish that the third season is being developed under the leadership of showrunner Craig Mazin following Druckmann’s departure from the series.
The change comes after HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season and confirmed that Mazin would continue as the show’s sole showrunner. While Druckmann remains closely associated with the original video games and the franchise as a whole, his latest comments make it clear that his involvement with the television adaptation has significantly decreased.
Neil Druckmann Explains His Absence From Season 3
In an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann directly addressed his involvement in the upcoming season. He said,
“I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season.”
That means Druckmann is not in a position to comment on how production is progressing creatively. Nevertheless, he stressed that Naughty Dog remains responsible for the The Last of Us intellectual property and suggested that the franchise has a future beyond HBO’s adaptation.
Druckmann also revealed that “a couple projects” are currently in development, although he stopped short of providing details. He added that he is excited to discuss them when the appropriate time arrives, potentially signaling that Naughty Dog has plans for The Last of Us outside the television series.
Meanwhile, Season 3 is expected to bring the HBO adaptation’s story to an end. Druckmann confirmed that the upcoming season will “wrap up” the series, resolving previous uncertainty over whether the events of The Last of Us Part II would require another season.
Production on Season 3 began in March and is scheduled to continue through November. Based on the direction established by Season 2, Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson is expected to become the central character, with the narrative potentially revisiting earlier events from her perspective before moving forward.
Bella Ramsey will return as Ellie, alongside Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Isabela Merced as Dina and Young Mazino as Jesse. Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter are also joining the cast as Yara and Lev.
With Mazin now steering the adaptation and Naughty Dog stepping away from its creative development, The Last of Us Season 3 represents a notable shift in how the acclaimed video game franchise is being translated for television.
