Smile Movie: Summary
Dr. Rose Cotter, who works at a psychiatric ward, meets up with patient Laura Weaver, a Ph.D. student who recently witnessed her professor’s death and believed that she was being haunted by a supernatural smiling entity who would kill her.
Surprised by this discovery, Rose tries to calm her down, but it is already too late; Laura kills herself with a shard from a broken vase. Rose discovers that Laura was smiling just before she killed herself, just like her professor.
A smile that follows you everywhere you go and haunts you even in your dreams. Cotter’s life turns upside down after the incident. The demon can create illusions which makes it harder for Cotter to distinguish between what is real and what is not.
These illusions create in her life and family, and her strained relationship with her sister gets worse. She sets out to investigate the whole thing with the help of her ex-Joel, believing that she is also cursed after she discovers her nephew’s gift next to her dead cat and the attending smiling at her.
She discovers that many people are dead, and all of them are reported to be haunted by a supernatural smiling entity. It has its chain effect, and whoever witnesses the death is cursed by the same smiling entity and dies within a week.
Rose and Joel meet Talley because he’s the only survivor of this chain reaction. He informs that the only way to break the chain effect is to kill someone else while there’s a witness so that the curse would transfer to the witness.
Rose decides against the idea and decides to face her demons. Rose witnessed her mother’s death at a young age, and she drove up to her old house, where her mother took her own life. She locks herself inside the house, depriving the demon of any witnesses, and the curse would break with her death.
Smile Ending Explained
Joel tries to look for Rose, who decides to end the curse with her death. Cotter is faced with her worst fear; she finds out that the demon has taken the shape of her dead mother.
Begging Rose to save her from killing herself gets her trembling at her knees, but she somehow gathers every inch of energy she can find in her bones and sets the demon into the fire and ending her childhood trauma of her mother overdosing.
Believing that she has killed the demon for good runs out of that haunted house, where she finds Joel looking for her. She releases that everything that happened was an illusion, and the demon has managed to find his next victim.
To save Joel, she runs inside the house, not realizing it’s already too late and the demon has complete power over her mind. The demon rips off his face and reveals his true nature before possessing her completely. Joel witnesses her killing herself helplessly and waits for his death.
Smiling is contagious. No one would have ever thought this would end up killing you. A smile that becomes the reason for people dying left people very confused. Fin very carefully and smartly tries to show people the vicious cycle of trauma that haunts people throughout their life cycle.
Even though various attempts have been made by people to normalize mental illness still, not much has changed. People try to make fun of people who suffer from psychological problems.
There are many platforms available for now for people to go and seek help, but many of them don’t reach for help and end up dying alone, like the victims of demons who die helplessly. No one to help them out while they are haunted by their trauma.
Reaching out would help a lot of people, so don’t be scared to hold a hand who needs your help. The demon is the society that is slowly killing the people who are already suffering.
