M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is an intense film exploring aging and fear. Even if you don’t like Shyamalan’s famous twists, Old is genuinely scary in its own way, focusing on aging, mortality, and life itself. The story is about families on vacation who are invited to a secluded beach for a fun day.
However, things take a dark turn when they notice strange events happening on the beach. If they wander into the rocks, they pass out and return to the beach with no memory of it. Children also age rapidly. The families soon realize that the beach is making them age quickly.
They figure out they are aging about one year every 30 minutes. Trying to leave only causes them to pass out and return to the beach, trapping them and causing them to age and weaken quickly.
As the film progresses, three main mysteries emerge. First, why does this beach cause rapid aging? Second, why do people black out and return to the beach when they try to leave? Third, why were these people brought to this beach?
The film answers the first two questions: the beach has something that makes cells age fast, but not hair or nails. It can heal cuts and mend bones instantly, leading to disturbing scenes like Chrystal’s (Abbey Lee) painful death due to her bones breaking and mending in weird ways.
The blackouts are due to intense pressure from magnetism, causing disorientation and loss of consciousness. The biggest question remains: why were these people chosen for the beach, and what is the Shyamalan twist?
Coral’s Role in Old
When the Cappa family arrives at the Anamika resort, Trent (Nolan River) befriends Idlib (Kailen Jude). They play a decoding game with Idlib’s secret language. This game becomes important later. After most of the beach-goers die, Trent (Emun Elliott) and Maddox (Embeth Davidtz) are left.
They start building a sandcastle and notice the coral. Trent remembers his games with Idlib and checks his notes. He finds a message saying, “My Uncle doesn’t like the coral,” which leads him to believe the coral might be the key to escaping the beach.
They think the coral might block the magnetism causing the blackouts and try to swim to it. Maddox gets stuck in the coral, and an employee (played by Shyamalan) assumes they have drowned. It is revealed that he has been watching them and reports that all subjects of Trial 73 have died.
The Trial in Old
Anamika resort is a cover for Warren & Warren, a pharmaceutical company. They collect patient information when people pick up their prescriptions and offer them a cheap vacation.
Each guest has a medical condition. Prisca (Vicky Krieps) has an ovarian tumor, Charles (Rufus Sewell) has schizophrenia, Chrystal has hypocalcemia, Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Bird) has epilepsy, and Mid-Sized Sedan has hemophilia.
Other beach-goers are related to the main targets. Guests receive a new drug in their welcome drinks, and the next day, they are taken to the beach where they age rapidly.
This helps Warren & Warren speed up drug trials. They discover that an anti-seizure drug worked for eight hours, equivalent to sixteen years. The characters are used as test subjects, and Warren & Warren continues experimenting with different drugs.
Some guests don’t have direct ailments, but Warren & Warren observes human behavior in fast-forward. For instance, Trent (Alex Wolff) and Kara become pregnant at puberty, Guy (Gael García Bernal) loses his eyesight, and Prisca loses her hearing.
Warren & Warren think they have made a big breakthrough until Trent and Maddox escape the beach and return to the resort with a journal from a previous victim.
This journal has names of missing people and supports their story. A cop at the resort finds the names and arrests those involved. Trent and Maddox go home to live with their aunt, who will be shocked to find her niece and nephew are now adults.
The Ending of Old
The ending of Old is not particularly satisfying because the film doesn’t need a traditional resolution. Shyamalan always intended this ending, even though the graphic novel Sandcastle doesn’t provide one.
Shyamalan said, “It was always this ending. For me, the graphic novel had no ending essentially, and didn’t explain anything. It had a few frames where they were insinuating something, so I kept writing that version of the story in my head.”
The film’s most poignant moment is when Trent and Maddox build a sandcastle, knowing their time is running out. Despite their adult bodies, their minds remain as children, making this scene deeply emotional. Shyamalan’s twist reveals that the real horror is human nature and our attempts to control time.
The twist might not please everyone, but it fits the film’s theme. The film’s emotional core is the relationship between Guy and Prisca, emphasizing that family and love are what truly matter. This theme is more important than the actions of a pharmaceutical company using people for experiments.
Old is available for streaming on Peacock in the U.S.
