Nintendo’s continued focus on remaking classic games has sparked debate among fans, but Shigeru Miyamoto believes these projects serve a much bigger purpose than simply revisiting the past.
Speaking in a recent interview with Famitsu, the legendary game designer defended Nintendo’s remake strategy, saying older games deserve a chance to reach new audiences.
Addressing criticism that the industry has become oversaturated with remakes, Miyamoto explained that many younger players never had the opportunity to experience Nintendo’s older titles.
“Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand,”
Miyamoto told Famitsu. He added that introducing players to classic games
“also leads to future developments,”
making remakes an important part of Nintendo’s long-term strategy.

His comments come as Nintendo prepares to release The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake later this year, following the recent launch of Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo has increasingly revisited classic franchises while balancing them with new releases, giving longtime fans modern versions of beloved games and introducing them to a new generation of players.
