Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo game designer responsible for some of the most influential video game franchises ever created, has been selected to receive Japan’s prestigious Order of Culture in 2026. The recognition makes him the first person from the video game industry to receive the honor, marking a historic moment for gaming as a cultural medium.

The Japanese government announced on October 23 that Miyamoto, 73, would be among eight recipients of this year’s award. His selection recognizes his contributions to media arts through video game development and his influence on Japanese entertainment worldwide.

The award ceremony is scheduled for November 3, Japan’s Culture Day, at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, where Emperor Naruhito will present the honors.

SHIGERU MIYAMOTO’S LEGACY ACROSS NINTENDO’S BIGGEST FRANCHISES

Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 and became one of the most influential creative figures in the company’s history. His breakthrough came with Donkey Kong in 1981, which introduced the character now known as Mario and helped establish Nintendo as a major force in the arcade gaming market.

He subsequently played a central role in building the Super Mario franchise, which became one of the defining properties of the video game industry. His work on The Legend of Zelda, first released in Japan in 1986, also helped shape the action-adventure genre.

Miyamoto drew inspiration from his childhood experiences exploring the countryside around Kyoto when developing The Legend of Zelda. The franchise’s emphasis on exploration, discovery, and environmental storytelling helped influence generations of game developers.

He also produced The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, released in 1998. Its transition to three-dimensional gameplay established influential design conventions for action-adventure games. The game’s enduring reputation demonstrates how Miyamoto’s creative contributions continue to shape the medium decades after their original release.

MIYAMOTO EXPANDS NINTENDO’S REACH BEYOND VIDEO GAMES

Miyamoto’s influence has increasingly extended beyond traditional game development. In addition to his work on Nintendo’s games, he has helped bring the company’s characters and worlds to new audiences through movies and theme park attractions.

He served as a producer on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. He also worked on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which was released in April 2026 and reportedly surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.

Miyamoto is also involved in Nintendo’s upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, currently scheduled to arrive on April 30, 2027. These projects highlight how his creative work has expanded from arcade cabinets and home consoles into mainstream cinema.

MIYAMOTO CREDITS THE PEOPLE BEHIND NINTENDO’S SUCCESS

Despite his reputation as one of gaming’s most influential creators, Miyamoto emphasized the collaborative nature of game development when discussing his selection for the award.

During a press conference at Nintendo’s headquarters, Miyamoto emphasized that video game development is a collaborative process involving the contributions of an entire team.

He said,

“I do not create games all by myself,”

describing the honor as recognition of the work he has accomplished alongside others.

Miyamoto also reflected on joining Nintendo in 1977, when video games were still an emerging entertainment medium. He credited his early involvement in the industry as one reason he had received such significant recognition.

Established in 1937, Japan’s Order of Culture recognizes individuals whose achievements have made substantial contributions to cultural development. Miyamoto was previously named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2019, making this latest distinction another major milestone in his career.

His selection represents a significant acknowledgment of video games as an art form and a cultural export. From Mario’s beginnings in Donkey Kong to Zelda’s influence on adventure games and Nintendo’s growing film presence, Miyamoto’s work has helped shape entertainment for audiences across generations.
