The award-winning light novel series “Sentenced to Be a Hero” has unveiled new details for its upcoming eighth episode, including a fresh trailer, story summary, and preview stills.
Originally published under Kadokawa’s Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint, the series has received multiple accolades, including recognition in the 2020 Kakuyomu Awards, the 2021 Tsugirano Awards for up-and-coming light novel series, and a feature in “This Light Novel is Amazing! 2023.” The dark fantasy work serves as the foundation for the ongoing TV anime adaptation.
Episode #08, titled “Sentence: Undercover Investigation in District of Sodrick 1,” will continue the escalating intrigue surrounding the penal Hero unit.
Episode #08 Summary
In the upcoming episode, Xylo grows suspicious that the Adventurers Guild may be operating behind the scenes after analyzing the assassins’ skill level. He proposes investigating the guild’s leader, Lideo Sodrick.
To carry out the plan, Patausche and Xylo assume disguises as a noblewoman and her lover. Under this cover, they infiltrate the guild while pretending to commission the assassination of the noblewoman’s husband.

The “Sentenced to Be a Hero” novel series by Rocket Shokai presents a dark fantasy narrative centered on criminals forced into heroism. Convicted offenders are sentenced to serve as “Heroes” in a penal military unit tasked with fighting against a demon king’s forces.
The story began in October 2020 on the self-publishing platform kakuyomu.jp. By September 2021, it received an official print release featuring illustrations by MEPHISTO under Kadokawa’s Dengeki no Shin Bungei label.
Following multiple award wins, including first place in the User Recommendations category in the 2020 Kakuyomu Awards and second place overall in the Tsugirano Awards, the series was greenlit for anime adaptation.
Story
“Hero” is the worst punishment in the world.
Those convicted of severe crimes are sentenced to become “Heroes” and compelled into mandatory military service in the war against the Demon Blight. Death offers no escape—those who fall in battle are resurrected and sent back to fight again.
Hero Xylo Forbartz, the former head of the Order of the Holy Knights, now commands a penal unit of criminals on the front lines. In the depths of war, he encounters Teoritta, one of the world’s most powerful weapons.

Determined to survive and exact revenge against those who betrayed him, Xylo forms a pact with the Goddess and plunges into a relentless conflict of war and political intrigue.
