Netflix has officially revealed the main trailer for The Ribbon Hero, one of the standout projects from its Annecy Festival anime slate. The upcoming animated feature film is set to premiere worldwide on August 8, 2026, and offers a bold new take on Osamu Tezuka’s classic Princess Knight.
The newly released trailer delivers a strong first impression, showcasing a visually rich world where a lone hero challenges a predetermined fate. With fluid animation, cinematic action, and a striking ribbon-based visual identity, the film is already positioning itself as a major anime release this year.
Yuki Igarashi Makes His Feature Film Debut
A major highlight of The Ribbon Hero is its director, Yuki Igarashi, who is stepping into feature-length filmmaking for the first time. Igarashi previously gained widespread attention for his work as a key animator on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, particularly the ending sequence that showcased his distinctive style.
He also directed Star Wars: Visions – Lop & Ochō, which was praised for its emotional storytelling and dynamic action. With The Ribbon Hero, Igarashi expands his creative scope, combining technical precision with a character-driven narrative.
In a statement shared via Netflix’s Tudum, Igarashi emphasized his respect for Tezuka’s legacy and his goal of delivering “blood-stirring, heart-pounding… ‘true’ mainstream entertainment,” while honoring the cultural roots of the original work.
Rather than a direct adaptation, The Ribbon Hero reinterprets the core themes of Princess Knight for a modern audience. The story follows a solitary protagonist who defies a harsh destiny, exploring ideas of identity, resilience, and personal freedom.
The trailer reflects this direction, balancing intense action with quieter emotional beats. The recurring ribbon motif plays a central role in both the visual design and thematic storytelling, symbolizing restriction, identity, and liberation.

This approach allows the film to remain connected to Tezuka’s influence while establishing its own identity for contemporary viewers.
A Strong Creative Team Behind the Film
The project is backed by a highly experienced team of creators. Character designs are led by Kei Mochizuki, known for Fate/Grand Order and Touken Ranbu, with additional design collaboration from Mai Yoneyama, who worked on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Animation character design is handled by Issei Arakaki, while Cedric Herole serves as art director, shaping the film’s detailed environments. Production is managed by Twin Engine, with animation by Studio Outline.
Together, the team brings a polished and cohesive vision to the film, evident in the trailer’s expressive animation and carefully crafted world.
