This later marks Anderson’s feature directorial debut, “Hard Eight,” in 1996. Hall earned a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for his performance. In 2012, Hall admitted that his Seinfeld character, library cop Joe Bookman, is arguably his best known to most people.

Hall initially started on stage in New York before making it big in Hollywood. He later started during the 1970s with small roles in Coma and on television shows such as M*A*S*H and Good Times. The actor once looked back and admitted during an interview about how when he first came out here, he was naive and didn’t know where to start. He further admitted that Television had no meaning for him as they never had a television.
The actor went on to star in several back-to-back movies during the 80s with roles in Ghostbusters II, The Truman Show, Midnight Run, and Say Anything, and in the 90s with Air Force One and The Rock. Meanwhile, the actor struck up a good friendship with Paul Thomas Anderson when the young director was working as a production assistant on a PBS movie. Anderson later gave him roles in Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia, and Hall went on to bag more roles in the following decades. Larry David also used him in hit series, including Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David once said in an interview how Philip made him laugh harder than any actor he has worked with.
