Samara Weaving proves she is a strong candidate for the modern scream queen with her new horror film, Azrael.
This film teams her with IFC Films and Shudder, giving it a unique horror experience with a post-apocalyptic twist. Azrael features a world where all characters are completely mute, making it similar to a silent film.
In Azrael, Weaving plays the title character who must become a human sacrifice to a supernatural force. This situation resembles what her character Grace faced in Ready or Not. Just before she becomes prey for the deadly creatures in the forest, Azrael makes a daring escape.
This escape starts a terrifying game of cat and mouse with her captors and the mysterious monsters. Want to know more about this horror film, including its cast, trailer, release date, and more? Here is everything about Samara Weaving’s Azrael.
When Will Azrael Be Released?
The hunt begins when Azrael officially premieres in theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024. This date is just a few days before October, a month known for its spooky events.
Although Azrael is the only new horror film releasing that day, it joins a busy weekend at the end of September.
Other films coming out on September 27 include Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the family-friendly animated movie The Wild Robot, and the World War II biopic Lee.
All these films will compete with the box office leader, Beetlejuice, which has held the top spot for several weeks.
Is Azrael Coming to Theaters?
Even though Azrael is a Shudder production, it will debut only in theaters on September 27. Shudder is a well-known streaming service that focuses on horror content.
This platform offers films like Late Night with the Devil and the Christmas parody It’s a Wonderful Knife. Both films appeared on Shudder shortly after their theater runs. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that Azrael will also become available on the streaming platform soon.
Does Azrael Have a Trailer?
The official trailer for Azrael starts in a nearly empty forest during the post-apocalypse. According to the trailer, the film may happen after the Rapture, a biblical event where the most faithful people vanish to live in paradise while others stay on Earth.
The trailer shows Azrael tied to a chair by a group of men, who perform a ritual to summon a strange humanoid creature. Before facing this creature, Azrael escapes, using the arm of her chair as a weapon. Will she be able to evade the cultists and monsters that now chase her? Only time will tell.
Who Stars in Azrael?
Samara Weaving leads the cast of Azrael. She is the niece of Hugo Weaving, known for his role in The Matrix. Samara is building a successful acting career, especially in horror films.
Her role in Ready or Not is her most famous horror performance, where she skillfully balances drama and humor. Other notable performances include The Babysitter, Babylon, and Scream VI.
During an interview at SXSW with Collider, Weaving described filming Azrael as one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of her career. She said, “I thought the biggest challenge was the obvious one, that no one speaks.
So it’s all physical, and how to capture a scene without any dialogue. But that ended up being so wonderful and such a great challenge because, actually, we say so much without saying anything, and that’s usually the most important things, you know, said without words.”
She continued, “The weather was the thing I thought was gonna be awful, but wardrobe was good to me. I remember I wore so many layers. I wore like eight layers.
My little head would pop out of layers of thermals. On weekends when we’d go hang out, people would be like, ‘Have you shrunken?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, no, that’s just miles of moleskin padding to keep me warm.’”
Other significant cast members in Azrael include Vic Carmen Sonne from Holiday as Miriam, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett from Candyman as Kenan, Eero Milonoff from The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki as Luther, Sebastian Bull from The Hunt as Isaac, Rea Lest from November as Liesl, Phong Giang from Violent Night as Sevrin, and Katariina Unt from Lioness as Josefine.
What Is the Plot of Azrael?
