In the upcoming season, the duo infiltrates the JCC (Japan Cleaner Culture), Japan’s elite assassin-training academy, to uncover information about the mysterious figure known as X, also called Slur.

To carry out the operation, Sakamoto goes undercover, disguising himself as his wife, Aoi, and takes on the role of a student teacher. Meanwhile, Shin enrolls at JCC as a student.

While the new season promises plenty of action, Sakamoto Days Season 2 will also take a closer look at the past of Sakamoto, Nagumo, Rion, and Slur.

Sakamoto Days Season 2 Gets a New Director, With Returning Staff Back on Board

One of the biggest changes in Sakamoto Days Season 2 is the appointment of a new director. Daisuke Nakajima, who previously directed Episode 22 of the first season, will take over as the series director.

However, fans can expect the anime to maintain its familiar style and tone. Season 1 director Masaki Watanabe will continue to be involved as supervising director, helping ensure a smooth transition between seasons.

Nakajima also shared his thoughts on the upcoming season in a statement released by Netflix:

I am honored to be working on such a popular Jump title. I will spare nothing in depicting the stylish action and individual aesthetics of Suzuki-sensei’s uniquely vivid cast of assassins. Carrying the baton from Season 1, I am bringing all my passion to expressing in animation the appeal, momentum, and epic scale of a work loved so fervently by fans around the world. Please look forward to Season 2’s grand opening!

Taku Kishimoto will once again handle series composition, while Yō Moriyama returns as character designer and Yūki Hayashi continues as the anime’s music composer.

Animation production remains with TMS Entertainment, the studio behind the first season. With much of the original staff returning, fans can expect the same blend of action, comedy, and style that helped make Sakamoto Days a fan favorite.

Why Sakamoto Days Season 2 Was Almost Guaranteed After Season 1’s Success

The first season of Sakamoto Days proved to be a major success for Netflix. According to Bleeding Cool, the anime stayed in Netflix’s global Top 10 for 14 consecutive weeks and amassed more than 106 million viewing hours.

Season 1 adapted the first 75 chapters of Yuto Suzuki’s manga, covering material from the first nine volumes. Given its strong viewership and popularity, it was no surprise that a second season was quickly greenlit.

Sakamoto Days Season 2 was first announced at Jump Festa 2026 in December 2025, where fans got an early look at the sequel through a teaser and key visual.

The latest announcement in June 2026 revealed much more, including the first full teaser trailer, a new key visual, a January 2027 release window, and additional details about the anime’s staff and cast.

Why Taro Sakamoto Can’t Escape His Assassin Past

Sakamoto Days revolves around Taro Sakamoto, a legendary hitman who gave up his dangerous life after falling in love with Aoi. He got married, started a family, and opened a small convenience store to enjoy a peaceful life away from the world of assassins.

However, that peace didn’t last for long. When a bounty is placed on his head, Sakamoto finds himself forced back into action to protect his family and friends. Along the way, he forms a close-knit group of allies, including Shin Asakura, a young telepath who becomes his most trusted partner.

In Season 2, the stakes are higher than ever. Instead of simply defending those he cares about, Sakamoto takes the fight directly to his enemies. His latest mission leads him deep into the assassin world as he works to uncover the truth behind a growing conspiracy that threatens everything he holds dear.

Live-Action Success Shows the Growing Reach of Sakamoto Days

Sakamoto Days has grown beyond its anime and manga. A live-action film adaptation opened in Japan on April 29, 2026, directed by Yūichi Fukuda, starring Ren Meguro as Taro Sakamoto and Fumiya Takahashi as Shin Asakura. The film sold over 1.14 million tickets in its first eight days and earned approximately 1.5 billion yen (roughly $9.58 million USD).

With the manga still ongoing, a successful live-action movie, and Sakamoto Days Season 2 arriving on Netflix in January 2027, the series continues to grow and attract fans around the world.
