The long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has raised questions about how long Rockstar Games will need to develop its future projects. However, the studio’s leadership believes its next game will not require another eight-year development cycle, pointing to improvements made during the creation of its upcoming open-world crime game.
In a behind-the-scenes report by Bloomberg, Rockstar executives discussed the scale of GTA 6’s production and how the experience could benefit future releases. Phil Hooker, co-head of development on GTA 6, said the studio’s updated technology and production resources should allow it to work more efficiently on subsequent projects.
“The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,”
Hooker explained. He also expressed confidence in building on the existing foundation rather than repeatedly rebuilding core systems to achieve more ambitious results.
ROCKSTAR PLANS TO BUILD ON GTA 6’S TECHNOLOGY
Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut also indicated that the studio does not intend to dismantle the foundations established during GTA 6’s development.
“We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart,”
Garbut said.
The comments suggest that Rockstar intends to reuse its improved technology and development systems instead of rebuilding major components for every new release. Hooker’s reference to going “more sideways than upwards” points toward expanding existing foundations with new content rather than repeatedly increasing the complexity of the underlying systems.

However, Rockstar has not announced the identity or release date of its next game. The comments indicate an ambition to shorten development times, not a confirmed schedule for a sequel or a new franchise.
The scale of Grand Theft Auto 6 helps explain the lengthy production period. Rockstar had 2,441 employees when Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018. By 2026, its workforce had grown to 4,711 employees across 12 offices, including 4,020 people working in development and quality assurance, according to the supplied report.
Garbut also described the detailed work involved in creating the game’s virtual environments. Designing a nightclub requires more than filling a room with background characters. Developers must animate individual patrons, script their behavior, create drinks, and coordinate music and lighting to make the location feel authentic.
Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe reportedly summed up the challenge by saying, “And now you understand why it took so long.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Whether Rockstar can deliver its next project substantially faster will depend on how effectively it reuses the technology and production systems developed for the game.
