Grand Theft Auto VI is carrying the weight of more than a decade of anticipation, and Rockstar Games has now openly acknowledged the enormous expectations surrounding its next major release.
In an exclusive interview with Dazed, Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, said the team faces “unprecedented pressure” as it prepares to deliver the long-awaited follow-up to Grand Theft Auto V.
However, Nelson suggested that Rockstar’s own expectations may be even greater than the pressure coming from fans.
“I don’t know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves as a team,”
he said, revealing how seriously the studio is approaching GTA VI after spending roughly 13 years developing the game.
Rockstar Says the Pressure on GTA VI Is Also a Privilege
Nelson later described the enormous expectations surrounding GTA VI as something Rockstar considers a privilege.
“It is a lot of pressure internally and externally, but that pressure is ultimately a privilege we know we are fortunate to have,”
he said.
“All we want to do is deliver for our audience.”
The pressure is understandable given the legacy Rockstar is trying to follow. Grand Theft Auto V became one of the most successful entertainment releases ever, while Red Dead Redemption 2 raised the studio’s reputation for realistic worlds, detailed characters, and immersive gameplay.

According to the Dazed deep dive, Rockstar has also expanded significantly since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, with the company more than doubling in size to build GTA VI. The studio has offices around the world, including a Los Angeles team focused heavily on the game’s pedestrian population, while more than 50 real street artists contributed murals inspired by locations such as Vice City’s Wynwood-like Stockyard.
Rockstar’s goal appears to be creating a more reactive version of the open-world freedom that defined its earlier games. GTA VI will allow players to experience Leonida through Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, whose physical appearance can reportedly change depending on food, exercise, sleep, and other activities.
The studio is also building what senior art director for characters Jamie-Lee Lloyd described as “the most detailed and varied character population we’ve ever created.” Rockstar’s developers researched Florida and Miami for years, meeting people from different walks of life and studying the culture they wanted to recreate within GTA VI.
With expectations continuing to grow, Rockstar is clearly aware that Grand Theft Auto VI cannot simply be another sequel. The pressure may be unprecedented, but Nelson’s comments suggest the studio sees that challenge as part of the opportunity to deliver what could become its most ambitious game yet.
