Rockstar Lead says GTA 6 Won’t Let Players Freely Carry Large Guns in Public Because NPCs Now React to Them

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says GTA 6 will limit how players carry weapons, with NPCs reacting differently depending on whether a gun is concealed, on their back, or being openly held.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is making one of the series’ most familiar gameplay conventions considerably more realistic. Players will no longer be able to freely pull out large weapons in crowded areas without drawing attention, as Rockstar is giving NPCs more sophisticated reactions to Jason and Lucia’s visible firearms.

The change was discussed by Rockstar North co-studio head and development lead Rob Nelson during an interview with TGG. According to Nelson, the approach used in GTA 5 no longer fits the level of visual and behavioral realism Rockstar is targeting for its next open-world game.

GTA 6 Makes Carrying Weapons More Realistic

Nelson explained that GTA 6 has moved away from allowing protagonists to seemingly produce large firearms from nowhere.

“We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now,”

he said, explaining that the old system would look out of place in the new game.

Players can still carry two concealed handguns, while long guns will have a much more noticeable presence. Two long guns can be carried simultaneously, but one must remain visible in the player’s hand while the other is positioned on their back.

That distinction will directly affect how pedestrians behave. Nelson explained that simply having a long gun strapped to the character’s back should generally not cause a major reaction, whereas openly holding one can make nearby civilians uncomfortable and cause them to move away.

The system also appears to extend to law enforcement. Police can respond differently depending on how a weapon is being carried, with openly displaying a rifle potentially escalating an encounter more quickly.

This represents another step toward the reactive open world Rockstar has been demonstrating throughout its GTA 6 previews. The game’s NPCs are designed to respond more naturally to Jason and Lucia’s actions, building on systems Rockstar previously explored in Red Dead Redemption 2.

With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, Rockstar’s revised weapon system could make simply walking through Vice City with a firearm feel significantly different from previous Grand Theft Auto games.
