Rockstar Games is feeling the enormous expectations surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, but according to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, the biggest pressure is coming from inside the studio. In a recent interview with IGN, Nelson acknowledged that the team is nervous about releasing the long-awaited sequel and living up to the legacy established by Grand Theft Auto 5.
The comments arrive as Rockstar prepares for the game’s November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has continued showcasing the sequel ahead of launch, with its latest official material highlighting the scale of Vice City, Leonida and the stories of protagonists Jason and Lucia.
Rockstar Says Internal Expectations Are the Biggest Challenge
Speaking with IGN, Nelson was asked about the extraordinary anticipation surrounding GTA 6. He initially responded with a laugh, but explained that Rockstar is trying to concentrate on making the sequel evolve the series rather than becoming overwhelmed by expectations.
“I try not to think about it,”
Nelson told IGN.
“You’re aware of it, of course. But I think we just have to try and make something that we feel is innovating on what we’ve done previously, evolving it while still making it feel familiar.”

Nelson made it clear that Rockstar’s own standards are creating even more pressure than the attention coming from players and the wider gaming industry.
“As much pressure as we feel externally, I don’t think it can compare to the pressure we put on ourselves as a team,”
he said.
“Everyone wants things to be perfect. We are nervous!”
At the same time, the Rockstar executive described the team’s nervousness alongside excitement about finally showing more of the game. He specifically pointed to the sequel’s larger world, deeper environments and increased density of traffic and population as areas where the team believes it has pushed the series forward.
That ambition is especially important given the shadow cast by GTA 5, which has remained one of the industry’s biggest successes since launching in 2013. GTA 6 therefore isn’t simply another sequel for Rockstar, but a follow-up to a game that became a massive commercial and cultural phenomenon.
Rockstar’s current release plans place GTA 6 on November 19, 2026, with the game confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar previously said the additional development time was intended to help achieve the level of polish expected from the studio.
With the release date now approaching, Nelson’s comments offer a rare look into Rockstar’s mindset. The studio clearly understands the pressure surrounding GTA 6, but its stated priority remains delivering a game that improves on Rockstar’s previous work without losing the qualities that made the series recognizable.
