Attack on Titan 3 could deliver the most satisfying ODM gear combat in the franchise’s video game history, according to a new hands-on preview by Tomas Franzese for But Why Tho?. After spending two hours with the upcoming action game, Franzese praised its improved movement system, describing the experience of swinging through the Trost District as similar to traversing New York City in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
The preview suggests that developer Omega Force has focused on addressing movement problems that affected earlier entries. While the previous games captured the fantasy of fighting Titans, awkward momentum and collisions could interrupt the experience. The latest installment aims to make aerial traversal feel more fluid, giving players greater control over how they approach enemies and execute attacks.
Attack on Titan 3 Refines ODM Gear Movement and Titan Combat
ODM gear is central to Attack on Titan, allowing soldiers to launch anchors, propel themselves through the environment, and strike Titans at vulnerable points. Making this system feel responsive is essential to recreating the speed and danger of the anime’s battles.
Franzese found that the new controls took some time to learn but became enjoyable once he adjusted to them. He particularly praised the sensation of chaining movements together and attacking Titans with stylish aerial strikes.
Producer Hideo Suzuki explained that the developers had invested considerable effort in improving how the equipment behaves in different situations. The system calculates anchor positions, angles, and trajectories to produce more natural movement.
Suzuki also described how the team fine-tuned movement around environmental obstacles. When the gear’s anchors target walls or other objects, adjustments help prevent characters from colliding awkwardly with them.

These changes are important because players need to maintain momentum while navigating crowded urban environments. The developers also introduced manual targeting for specific parts of Titans, giving players greater precision during combat rather than relying entirely on automatic attack positioning.
Human Battles and Later Story Chapters Add Variety
The preview also explored Chapter 9, which takes place during the Raid on Liberio in the anime’s fourth season. This section introduces combat against human opponents, expanding the action beyond the familiar encounters with Titans. However, Franzese found aerial Titan battles more satisfying during his preview.
The game will also feature larger open areas that give Omega Force room to expand the world beyond events depicted in detail in the anime and manga. Suzuki said the development team worked with Kodansha to introduce original elements while respecting the franchise’s established universe.
Despite the gameplay improvements, the preview raised some concerns about the narrative presentation. Players create an original character who joins the Scout Regiment and experiences the anime’s major events. Franzese found that frequent cutscenes and the use of a customizable protagonist sometimes made the story less engaging than directly participating in familiar scenes.
Attack on Titan 3 is scheduled to launch on December 10, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam.
The game will cover the anime’s story from its beginning through its conclusion, while allowing players to experience events through their own customizable Scout. Its combination of refined ODM movement, manual Titan targeting, and expanded combat encounters could make it a notable improvement over earlier entries.
For fans who have wanted to experience the freedom of flying between buildings and attacking Titans at high speed, the hands-on preview suggests that movement may be one of the game’s biggest strengths.
