Rockstar Lead says GTA 6 Is “Set Over Chapters” Like Red Dead Redemption 2, But Players Can “Go Off the Rails”

Rockstar Games is using a chapter-based structure for Jason and Lucia’s story while still allowing players to break away from the planned narrative path.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking a major storytelling lesson from Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar Games co-studio head Rob Nelson has confirmed that the upcoming open-world game is “set over chapters,” suggesting that the story will have a more defined progression than GTA 5 while retaining the freedom expected from the series.

The revelation came from a recent interview with Trois Couleurs, in which Nelson discussed how Rockstar develops its worlds, missions and narratives. Although Rockstar has not revealed how many chapters GTA 6 will contain, Nelson’s comments make clear that chapters are being used as part of the game’s fundamental structure rather than simply as labels between groups of missions.

GTA 6 Will Use Chapters to Move Jason and Lucia Through Leonida

According to Nelson, Rockstar begins by establishing the major events that need to happen in the story before developing the missions and locations that connect those moments. He explained that the narrative team first determines where Jason and Lucia begin, what happens to them and how those events push them toward different parts of the map.

Nelson described the process by saying,

“The game is set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move.”

The team then develops major “tent-pole” missions around important plot points, using them as catalysts that move the protagonists into new stages of their journey.

This approach is particularly interesting because Red Dead Redemption 2 used chapters to give Arthur Morgan’s story a clear sense of progression while still allowing players to freely explore the world between major missions. Rockstar appears to be applying a similar philosophy to GTA 6, although the game will center on two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, rather than Arthur’s largely singular perspective.

Rockstar Still Wants Players to Go Off the Rails

The chapter structure does not mean GTA 6 will become a heavily linear experience. In fact, Nelson specifically discussed what happens when players decide not to follow the path Rockstar has designed.

After establishing its major missions and narrative beats, the development team considers

“What if the player does something different, can we allow for it, if the player wants to go off the rails?”

Nelson explained that Rockstar builds the game in layers and repeatedly tests what works before deciding how much freedom can be incorporated around the main storyline.

That philosophy fits Rockstar’s established approach to open-world design. Players can be guided toward important story moments while still having opportunities to explore, cause chaos, interact with the world and approach situations differently.

Rockstar’s official GTA 6 website Rockstar Games confirms that Jason and Lucia’s story takes place across Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. The pair become caught in a criminal conspiracy after an easy score goes wrong, forcing them to rely on each other as their situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

GTA 6 Is Borrowing More Than World Design From RDR2

The chapter system could ultimately give GTA 6 a stronger narrative rhythm without sacrificing its open-world identity. GTA 5 was built around three protagonists and allowed players to switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, while Red Dead Redemption 2 used chapters to chart Arthur’s journey through major changes in location and circumstance.

With Jason and Lucia at the center of GTA 6, Rockstar has an opportunity to combine the focused storytelling of Red Dead Redemption 2 with the freedom that defines Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
