Rockstar Approached Netflix First for GTA 6 Extended Look Premiere, PR Representative Says

The unusual six-hour Netflix exclusivity was reportedly Rockstar Games’ own idea, not a deal initiated by the streaming giant.

Rockstar Games’ decision to premiere the Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look on Netflix first left many fans wondering whether the streaming service had secured the exclusive through a major business deal. However, new information suggests that Netflix was not the company behind the initial idea.

Rockstar PR representative told Kinda Funny Games that Rockstar itself approached Netflix about hosting the extended gameplay presentation. When asked why the developer chose the streaming platform, the representative reportedly gave a simple explanation: “We wanted to go to Netflix.”

Rockstar’s Unusual GTA 6 Marketing Strategy

The Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27 before arriving on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and GTA 6 website six hours later. The presentation offered more than 26 minutes of in-game footage and gave players their most detailed look yet at Jason, Lucia, Leonida, and the upcoming game’s gameplay systems.

Rockstar Games confirmed that the presentation was captured entirely using in-game footage on PlayStation 5. However, the initial Netflix exclusivity caused confusion among fans, especially because the full video was unavailable to non-subscribers during the first six-hour window.

Some players believed Netflix had paid for the exclusive to attract new subscribers, but the comments shared with Kinda Funny Games suggest the decision came from Rockstar’s side. Netflix also presented the premiere as a partnership, with the company’s Brandon Riegg saying,

“The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.”

The Netflix premiere appears to be part of Rockstar’s effort to try something different with GTA 6’s marketing campaign. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick previously described the strategy as

“an example of Rockstar trying new things”

Zelnick also told Bloomberg that viewers would better understand the strategy after watching the presentation, stating,

“I think when the title is launched on Netflix, if you watch it, you’ll understand more.”

While the extended look has now been released more widely, Rockstar has not revealed whether future GTA 6 marketing will include additional Netflix premieres or similar exclusive events.

The move nevertheless demonstrated Rockstar’s willingness to experiment with the promotion of its biggest release. With Grand Theft Auto 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar still has months of marketing opportunities ahead and could continue exploring unexpected ways to reach the game’s enormous global audience.
