Why did Tom Hanks step down from the movie?
Wilson disclosed the reason behind Hanks’ decision to decline the movie offer. If Hanks had accepted the role, his character Harry would have experienced a divorce and ultimately ended up marrying the lead actress character, Sally. However, Hanks wasn’t fond of the concept because he was personally going through a divorce during that period and was content with his current state of happiness.
“People probably don’t know this, but Tom was offered ‘When Harry Met Sally’, and he turned it down because he was going through a divorce, and he was very happy to be not married”, Wilson shared.
The role of Harry Burns, which was initially offered to Tom Hanks, ultimately landed in the capable hands of Billy Crystal. Crystal, alongside Meg Rayan, brought to life the captivating tale of two dear friends contemplating the possibility of remaining strictly platonic in the beloved 1989 film.
