Capcom has officially crowned Resident Evil 2 Remake as the best-selling game in the history of the Resident Evil franchise. According to the company’s latest financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, the 2019 remake has reached 19.75 million copies sold, overtaking Resident Evil 5, which held the record for 15 years with 19.01 million copies.

The milestone highlights the remake’s remarkable longevity nearly seven years after its launch. While recent releases like Resident Evil Requiem and Resident Evil 4 Remake have attracted significant attention, Resident Evil 2 Remake continues to add new players through steady catalog sales.

Capcom also revealed that the Resident Evil series has now surpassed 213 million copies sold worldwide, making it one of the company’s strongest-performing franchises and placing it ahead of the lifetime sales of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series.

Resident Evil 2 Remake overtakes Resident Evil 5 after 15 years

Originally released in January 2019, Resident Evil 2 Remake reimagined the 1998 survival horror classic with modern visuals, over-the-shoulder gameplay, and redesigned environments while retaining the original story featuring Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.

Capcom’s latest sales data shows the game has now sold 19.75 million units, enough to surpass Resident Evil 5’s long-standing total of 19.01 million copies. The achievement underscores the continued demand for the remake years after launch, with catalog sales remaining a key contributor to Capcom’s quarterly performance.

The publisher reported that its Digital Contents business delivered strong year-over-year growth, driven by both new releases and older titles. Capcom also recorded 23.81 million game sales during the quarter, with catalog games reaching a record quarterly high.

Resident Evil franchise continues to grow with new and classic releases

While Resident Evil 2 Remake now sits at the top of the franchise’s sales rankings, newer entries continue to post strong numbers. Resident Evil 4 Remake has climbed to 16.04 million copies sold, while Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has reached 18.41 million and Resident Evil Village stands at 15.86 million lifetime sales.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil Requiem has become the fastest-selling entry in franchise history, shipping 8 million copies within four months of release. Although it still trails the series’ lifetime leaders, its rapid start suggests it could continue climbing the rankings over the coming years.

With 213 million copies sold across the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom’s survival horror series remains one of gaming’s most successful properties. The publisher is also preparing for the release of the live-action Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger later this year, followed by Resident Evil Veronica, which is currently scheduled to launch in 2027.
