Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage: Recap of Episode 1 (Kage’s Errand)
The nature of this season was well-established to be a side story. So, we start Episode 1 with the events that took place during Bojji’s training with Despa to become stronger. We see Despa causing a loud commotion for having an age spot on his handsome face that was not in the least evident.
Kage and Bojji thought nothing much of it, but this became a concern once Despa refrained from training Bojji as he was too embarrassed to show his face to others. With Kage & Bojji now concerned, Kage made suggestions to fix the issue at hand, using medicines or any edibles. That’s when Despa had a Eureka moment.
The Shuddercap mushroom holds the medicinal property of preserving one’s beauty. Despa believes it would rejuvenate his beauty back to normal. This comedic segment led to the purpose of the episode’s title, “Kage’s Errand.”
Despa started with Bojji’s training but with some comedic countermeasures to avoid worsening his situation while Kage was out looking for Shuddercap mushrooms. However, Kage underestimated the value of such a mushroom, as he could not find it in any of the local stores he visited. But, once Kage caught wind of the mushroom’s whereabouts. He immediately took off to the Okkana forest, knowing full well of the dangers that lie ahead.
Once Kage entered the forest, he was introduced to a feisty bear-like creature with a granny stuck on top of the bear’s back. Once Kage saved the granny from this precarious situation, she was guilt-tripping poor Kage into helping her get home and do all kinds of house chores.
Unfortunately, this held up Kage until he was finished with the granny’s indirect demands, making it too late to hunt for the mushrooms anymore. But before Kage headed back empty-handed, the granny rewarded Kage with a basket of pancakes for his goodwill.
Once Kage returned to inform Despa of what happened, Despa was a bit let down. But his mood switched to a complete 180 once he caught the smell of the pancakes given by the granny. To much surprise, they were the Shuddercap pancakes, made with the Shuddercap mushroom as the main ingredient.
Despa then says the granny is not as senile as she may seem since she is well known for taking people hostage for those who come in search of the Shuddercap mushroom to fulfill their greed. So, Despa was honestly surprised to know that Kage received the Shuddercap from such a person.
The second half of the episode showed us how Despa found the opportunity of hitting two birds with one stone when he advised Bojji and Kage to venture out and earn money doing errands. But, Bojji at that time was weak with a disability that didn’t allow him to work in many jobs. Kage then figured out a way of earning money, considering Bojji’s strong suits.
Kage set up a carnival-type game where the person is allowed to throw beanbags at Bojji and earn 100 gold coins if they manage to hit him. The entry fee for each throw is merely ten copper coins. So, going by the general conversion rate, the winner can earn an approximate 1 billion % increase in profit. This riled up many people to give it a shot, as Kage intended.
Kage knew of Bojji’s talent in dodging, so everything went as Kage expected. But things took a dark turn with the last contender. We were introduced to a poor child with ragged clothes wanting to spend all the money she had to give this a shot and get enough money to treat her sick mother, swaying Bojji’s morality into considering not dodging. But Kage convinced him otherwise.
Once Kage and Bojji returned with a bag full of money, Bojji felt defeated for what he had done. But once Kage explained the situation to Despa, he was proud to realize Bojji had learned a valuable social lesson. So Bojji and Kage were overjoyed to hear Despa agreeing to help the girl’s family out by treating the mother and providing the young girl with an education. Episode 1 concludes with this heartwarming juncture.
