Criminal Minds: Evolution has just finished Season 2, but Season 3 is already in the works. Fans will soon see the return of their favorite FBI profilers as production on the new season has begun.
The police procedural show ended its second season this August, and while viewers knew more episodes were coming due to the renewal at Paramount+, they didn’t expect the new season to start so soon. The BAU team is back on set, preparing for the next chapter of the beloved show.
The exciting news was shared on social media via the official Criminal Minds Facebook and Instagram accounts. The Facebook post read, “Wheels up! The new season of #CriminalMinds: Evolution is officially in production.” The announcement was accompanied by behind-the-scenes photos.
One picture shows the team brainstorming in front of the investigation board, while another features them with a clapper board. The close-up of the clapper board reveals that Bethany Rooney, known for her work on Beverly Hills and Grey’s Anatomy, is directing the episode, with Anthony Vietro as the camera operator.
The photos also show A.J. Cook’s character, Special Agent Jennifer Jareau, with a new hairstyle. There are also shots of desk nameplates for Penelope Garcia and Emily Prentiss, hinting at the return of characters played by Kirsten Vangsness and Paget Brewster.
Fans are especially eager to see the return of Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) and Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), who has been absent for some time. Gubler has previously suggested he might return, although scheduling issues have been a barrier.
What To Expect From Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3?
Season 2 wrapped up the Gold Star storyline, which some fans feel could have been better. Showrunner Erica Messer hints that viewers should expect serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) to make a return. “Oh, yeah. He’s not done.
I feel like, at the end of every season, he just finds a new way to cause trouble,” Messer mentioned in a recent interview with Collider. She added that Voit will continue to play a major role as the story unfolds, with his identity as Sicarius being revealed.
Regarding the conclusion of the Gold Star storyline, Messer said, “We wanted to be clear that the Gold Star investigation is complete. There won’t be anything dangling from that, and those three characters (Jade, Pete Bailey, and Mila) are so heavily tied to that storyline.
Right now, we’re not seeing bringing them back, but I would never say never. And like I said, we’re not done with the season break yet. It feels complicated to say, on one hand, ‘Gold Star is over,’ and then, ‘By the way, here are some Gold Stars.’ That’s where we are right now. It just feels like we wanna have a clean break.”
A release date for Season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution has not been announced yet, but updates will be available soon.
