Phantom Blade Zero is introducing a distinctive weapon system that encourages players to experiment with different fighting styles. Among its 30 weapon types, the Drunken Sword stands out for a particularly unusual mechanic. According to S-Game CEO and game director Soulframe, the character becomes stronger as they get drunker, making intoxication an integral part of the weapon’s combat identity.
In an interview with South Korean gaming outlet Inven Global, Soulframe discussed how the developers designed weapons to offer different mechanics rather than simply increasing damage or attack speed. The Drunken Sword is one example of this approach, combining unconventional movements with a combat rhythm that separates it from more traditional weapons.
Soulframe explained that the weapon’s attack range and tempo differ significantly from other options. As the character becomes intoxicated, the sword moves more unpredictably, while increasing drunkenness makes the character stronger. This creates a fighting style built around a mechanic that is unusual even for an action RPG.
PHANTOM BLADE ZERO’S DRUNKEN SWORD OFFERS A DIFFERENT COMBAT STYLE
The Drunken Sword reflects S-Game’s broader approach to weapon design. Rather than making every weapon function similarly, the studio has developed distinctive mechanics intended to give players new ways to approach encounters.
Soulframe revealed that the team created 30 weapon types and wanted players to explore as many of them as possible without forcing them to abandon their preferred fighting style. Players can theoretically complete the entire game using a single weapon, including a wooden sword designed as an additional challenge.
Because Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player experience, the developers prioritized variety and experimentation over making every weapon equally powerful in every situation.

The game’s combat draws inspiration from traditional kung fu and classic martial arts films. Soulframe said the development team studied martial arts techniques and worked with kung fu experts, including Donnie Yen, to help translate cinematic movements into responsive gameplay.
The result combines fast-paced swordplay, elaborate boss encounters, and weapons with different mechanical identities. The Drunken Sword fits this philosophy by turning intoxication into a gameplay feature rather than treating it as a purely visual effect.
Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
