Early Life & Career
Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born on January 10, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother, Millie, an opera singer, motivated her as she grew up in nearby Lindenhurst, Long Island. She was a mainstay in the musical department at Lindenhurst High School and was recognized as a senior at the Juilliard School in New York City. The young and gifted singer, like her mother before her, ended up choosing domestic life over the stage, marrying her high school boyfriend, Dennis Benatar, in 1971.
Dennis was positioned in Virginia as a soldier, so the two moved. Benatar’s new life as a housewife and bank cashier, on the other hand, was not for her. Benatar grabbed the chance to join a small cabaret band that performed in crowded Richmond clubs. The band’s popularity grew under Benatar’s leadership, which stimulated the singer’s ambition to become a performer. Benatar, who had recently separated, finally returned to New York.
She started working the club scene in that city, performing classic songs she assumed her audiences would enjoy. Her talent was obvious, and she attracted particular the interest of a Chrysalis Records producer during a performance at the Manhattan club Catch a Rising Star, who quickly decided to sign her to a record deal. But Benatar was nervous about keeping doing what she was doing.
Career Highlights & Awards
All of it changed when she met Neil Giraldo, a hard-charging rock guitarist whose strums gave Benatar the sound she desired. In the Heat of the Night, Benatar’s debut album was released in 1979, with Giraldo as her backing band. The album was a huge success, with two massive hit singles, “Heartbreaker” and “I Need a Lover.”Benatar settled her position as rock’s leading female vocalist with the release of her second album, Crimes of Passion, a year later. The album immediately went platinum, owing to three big singles: “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Treat Me Right,” and “You Better Run.” Across the decade, Benatar’s career expanded. There were more albums and hit singles, such as “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong,” with MTV aggressively pushing the videos.
Her position as a 1980s icon, however, did not carry well into the 1990s. While Benatar kept going to release music, including albums like Gravity’s Rainbow (1993) and Innamorata (1997), she was unable to repeat her earlier success.
Her personal life was also a hindrance. In 1982, Benatar wedded her guitarist, Neil Giraldo. The pair has two daughters, Haley and Hana, and they work well together both on and off stage. Benatar, whose last album, Go, was launched in 2003, has recently plugged into the 1980s nostalgia. She still performs live, and in 2009 she went on tour with Debbie Harry, another groundbreaking female rock musician. Benatar’s career includes ten platinum albums, eight number one singles, and four Grammy nominations.
