Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Release Date
After the first season of Our Flag Means Death became a sensation. Season two of the series is much awaited by the fans. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, it is anticipated.
The writers of the show are ready to hop on to next the chapter and are just waiting for the green light. So, as soon as HBO gives the green light, the production will begin in full force. That’s how much we know about Our Flag Means Death season 2 as of now. So, while we wait for the much anticipated new season. Let’s look back at the journey the show has taken us on so far.
What Happened So Far in Our Flag Means Death?
Stede Bonnet is out on his pirating adventure along with his wacky crew-mates. Being a total rookie at this gig, Stede creates a lot of problems. But his friendly and affectionate approach is what makes him different from other pirates. On his adventure, he plans to loot and attack a ship without knowing it’s the English Royal Navy Warship. The captain of the Navy ship turns out to be Stede’s old bully, Captain Nigel. And to Stede’s torment, his actions have still not changed. But he doesn’t torment him for too long as Stede accidentally kills him.
After that incident, Stede is haunted by nightmares of Nigel. Hence he decides to be the ‘Gentleman Pirate’ and kill people with kindness rather than violence. As the story progresses, he meets Edward Tech or Captain Blackbeard. Both of them become good friends which blossom into more towards to end. Blackbeard’s fascination with the aristocratic world & Stede’s efforts in being more “pirate”, brings the two closer. After this point, the journey is centered around these two & their adventures.
There are lots of unique characters besides Stede and Blackbeard that the story focuses on. Stede’s crew has Buttons, a solemn guy with a seagull as his only companion. Then there is poetic accountant Lucious and makeshift guitarist Frenchie. A violent loving giant, Wee John Feeney, likes to set everything on fire. A nameless swede who only likes to sing and Oluwande, the only sensible guy from the bunch. Another mysterious young man named Jim is later revealed to be a woman. Then there is Black Pete who boasts about working with Blackbeard. And he is the only one closest to the characteristics of a Pirate. Each of these characters has an interesting storyline of its own.
What to Expect in Our Flag Means Death Season 2?
Well, season 1 definitely ended on a cliffhanger! With everyone stranded on an island, there could be a potential threat out there. So, we might see them getting rescued from the island or we might not. Besides that, we’ll see more of Edward and Stede’s budding romance. Since there has been no news on season 2, we don’t know much about it. However, we assure you that it will deliver more drama romance, and comedy.
Is Stede’s fate in danger? Although the possibility seems less, the writers could kill off Stede in season 2. Since Stede is loosely based on a real person and he was executed for his crimes as a Pirate. The show might follow this route but given its success, it seems much less likely. Also, without Rhys Darby as Stede, the show wouldn’t be the same. So probably writers won’t take such a risk.
The side characters also have major story arcs that will continue in the new season. Oluwande and Jim develop feelings for each other, so that storyline is will be explored. Even Black Pete and Lucious get together after the latter’s struggle with his gender identity throughout the series. The ending also shows most of the crew abandoned and scattered. So, it will be interesting to see how Stede gets his gang back together.
Did I mention Stede is also a family man? he has a family back home so maybe some of that angle can come into play next season.
The Potential Cast of the Season 2
Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be back as Stede Bonnet and Captain Blackbeard. The OG crew includes famous faces like GOT’s Hodor – Kristian Nairn as Wee John Feeney. Along with him Joel Fry as Frenchie, Nathan Foad as Lucious & his love interest Black Pete played by Mathew Maher will be back.
Also present in the next season is the only gender-neutral character Jim, played by Vico Ortiz, and their love interest Oluwande played by Samson Kayo. And of course, other members of Stede’s crew, Ewen Bremner as Buttons and Con O’Neill as Izzy are also in season 2. Apart from that, the cast missing in the next season will be Rory Kinnear as Captain Nigel.
There is no news about the potential cast of season 2 that we know of. But with a new story arc taking shape next season, there is the possibility of some new characters as well. We must wait and watch to know what happens!
The Important Themes of The Show
There are several relatable themes throughout the series like friendships, brotherhood & romance. The ruthless Pirate Edward or Blackbeard becomes compassionate with Stede’s company. Even Stede never received the kind of love he got from Blackbeard despite having a family. It also sparks light on solidarity vs community. Stede who was lonely even while surrounded by his family found a brotherhood amongst his crewmates – a group of strangers.
The inclusion of the LGBTQ community in the most authentic way is one of the highlights of the show. Besides Ed and Stede’s relationship, there is a non-binary character referred to as ‘they’ in the series. Even crewmates Black Pete and Lucious become a couple at the end. So, a lot of romances bud amidst the chaos & drama.
Another interesting theme is the fun twist brought into the tough pirate life. Stede belongs to a rich background and unlike other pirates, he is over-the-top about everything. From walk-in-closets to fancy dresses, Our Flag Means Death could easily be called a satire about elite people.
