Onimusha: Way of the Sword has made a remarkably strong debut, selling more than 1 million copies worldwide on its launch day. Capcom announced the milestone on September 7, 2026, making the new title one of the most successful launches in the franchise’s history.
The achievement is particularly significant because Way of the Sword is the first major new Onimusha game in more than two decades. Its launch also pushes total sales across the Onimusha franchise beyond 10 million units, meaning the latest release has already contributed roughly 10% of the series’ lifetime sales.
Way of the Sword Marks a Major Onimusha Comeback
According to Capcom’s official announcement, Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes players to Edo-era Kyoto and follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. The game combines the franchise’s signature sword-based combat with modern technology, cinematic visuals and a new story.

Capcom also credited several pre-release efforts for helping generate interest ahead of launch. These included multiple playable demos and hands-on events designed to give players an opportunity to experience the game before release.
The success could have implications beyond Onimusha. Capcom has previously emphasized its intention to “re-activate” dormant intellectual properties, and the company reiterated that strategy alongside the sales announcement.
The publisher says it will continue leveraging its extensive catalog of franchises while developing major new releases. With Way of the Sword bringing Onimusha back to the forefront after such a long absence, its first-day performance could strengthen the case for reviving more of Capcom’s older properties.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on Nintendo Switch 2.
