FULL SUMMARY – CHAPTER 1185
Someone had instructed Candel to take Brook on as her retainer, with strict orders to teach him proper manners and etiquette. It was not going to be an easy task. Brook wandered the royal palace grounds, completely distracted. “There are so many beauties around the royal palace,” he sang out playfully. “Beauty, beauty, skip one, beauty…”
A man abruptly shoved him forward. “Here!! From today you are Lady Candel’s number one retainer!!”
Brook looked at her and beamed. “But Lady Candel is the most beautiful!!” Without missing a beat, he leaned in. “Show me your panties.”
“Kyaaa!!” Candel shrieked, backing away as an onlooker scolded Brook loudly.
Catching her breath, Candel looked at his outfit. “Do you hate the uniform?” she asked.
“If I get used to ‘school’—this rigid structure—I won’t be able to make good music!!” Brook protested. “But I do want to wear the battle group’s clothes someday!!” He looked back at her, his usual cheerful demeanor returning. “You’re beautiful!! To be Lady Candel’s retainer♡ Yohoho. Is there any man Lady Candel likes?”
Candel hesitated, her expression softening. “…’Lady’. There is, but he’s out of my reach.” She gripped her weapon a little tighter. “That’s why… I trained with the sword, so I could be closest to him…”
Brook tilted his head. “If you dressed more like a woman, you’d be popular with him too!!”
“It’s not necessary,” Candel replied firmly. “Just being by his side is enough…!!”
Brook paused, connecting the dots. “Eh? ‘By his side’!? Could it be…” He looked at the other man present, then back to Candel. “May I please see your panties?”
“Me?” the man asked, bewildered.
“No,” Brook clarified. “Lady Candel, are your panties men’s too?”
“No!!!” Candel yelled.
“Eh! Show me your panties!!” Brook insisted.
The man sighed. “Brook, your language hasn’t improved…”
Candel finally snapped. “When asking people for things, be polite!! Of course not!! Before honorifics, you need delicacy and manners!! I’ll hammer proper behavior into you!! Geez…”
“Eh!?” Brook stood at attention. “Then I’ll work super hard!!”
“Strength and manners are proportional,” Candel stated proudly.
Brook smiled warmly, noticing the way the people looked at her. “Lady Candel is admired by everyone.”
Time passed, and Brook found himself recounting the history of the kingdom to a young Princess Shuri. He remembered the time a World Government ship had drifted ashore in Esperia.
“Come to think of it…” Brook mused, “The country was temporarily in an uproar over this unprecedented authority. Celestial Dragons…?”
He remembered Candel during those days. “She was like the ‘Sun of the Country’,” Brook said softly. “Yes!! They were quite intimidating!! Perhaps from stress, Lady Candel was bedridden for several months… The gloominess of the citizens at that time was unbelievable!! Yohoho!!” He caught himself laughing and quickly corrected his tone. “It’s bad to laugh, but it was exactly like the sun setting!! However!! The news after that was amazing, Princess Shuri!!”
Brook threw his hands up excitedly. “The rugged but beloved prince, your father, ascended to the throne as ‘King’!! And at the same time, his marriage to your mother, Lady Candel!!! And then… your birth, Princess Shuri!!!”
He mimicked the cheering crowds from that day. “Show us her face~♡ Cute♡ Mother’s victory♡” “Ah! I digressed,” Brook chuckled. “But… I love your parents!! That’s why I would throw my life away for those two!! They are my great benefactors!! Please listen to ‘Throw It Away Rock’♫”
Shuri pouted at him. “Because it’s you!! Too slow!! Say it from your heart!!”
Brook struck a chord. “Then Brook… Papa Mama♫ Papa Mama♫“
“If I were in danger?” Shuri interrupted.
“Well, of course!! I would offer my life!!” Brook answered without hesitation.
“Because I’m Papa and Mama’s daughter?” She looked past him and beamed. “Papa♡ Father♡”
The King approached, looking exasperated. “…Are you a child!”
“I love Father too~~♡” Shuri sang out.
Brook strummed his instrument. “Princess Shuri, when you want to be independent from your parents… How about a song like this? Leave me alooooooone~~♫“
Shuri burst out laughing. “Ahaha, what are those words?”
“It’s a dialect from a country in the West called ‘Kamigata’,” Brook explained. “Leave me alooooooone~♫ I’m not a puppy lured by candy♫ I’m not a kid, you know♫“
The joyful days did not last. The instruments that were once the country’s treasure rotted away, and a thick fog turned into a suffocating smog. What echoed in the town wasn’t music, but the relentless coughing of the people. The toxic air attacked the lungs of tens of thousands, claiming the lives of hundreds.
“Let’s deliver music—” Brook started, before doubling over. “Cough!! Cough! YEAH!! It swallowed the island…!! The fog will clear!! Absolutely!!” He tried to play his guitar, but the strings groaned with a terrible gigi sound. “The sound is bad. Huh?”
Nearby, an official was delivering grim news to the King. “King…!! The ‘Heavenly Tribute’… to pay to the ‘World Government’… We cannot calculate it…!!!”
Outside, Shuri was practicing her combat drills. “Yaa!! Whoops!!”
“Princess, you sometimes move as if you’ve seen the future!!” Brook noted, watching her agility.
“Ehehe!! I… will become like Mama… Mother!!” Shuri declared.
“I think you have plenty of aptitude, but… for a princess to fight on the front lines, Father would…” Brook trailed off. “Father… seems to be worrying about something lately.”
“I can guess what it is, but there is nothing we can do,” Brook admitted. “I simply follow the King…!!”
Shuri looked at him curiously. “Didn’t you want to become a pirate? Brook.”
“Duty and gratitude come first. My own dreams can take a backseat!!” he replied firmly.
“Hmm. I’ll go too then♡”
“You can’t!!”
“I’m going,” she insisted.
Their banter was cut short when the King called an assembly. “The enemy will be the ‘World Government’. It will be a war.”
“Eh!!?” Brook and the others gasped in shock.
“Wait a minute, King!!” Brook stepped forward. “Understood. King, please tell us the reason!!”
The King’s face was grim. “Brook… They demanded a thousand ‘slaves’. That is the way to be exempt from this year’s Heavenly Tribute. Slavery in the Holy Land is equal to ‘death’!! I have no intention of choosing and handing over sacrifices!! In two months, the government’s ship will arrive.”
Brook processed the devastating news. “Is this country already finished?” he asked his commander. “Non-affiliated countries become lawless zones, right? Is it true we’ll be thrown into darkness!? Everything… The other day, a country disappeared in the West Blue too.”
Trying to lift the heavy despair, Brook began to sing a defiant tune. “I♪ heard about this♫ In the sea of carnage♪ The authorities~~ are too scared to approach♫ Soldiers called Samurai♪ Citizens called Giants♫ Stories of such guys existing♫ Like being scared of bees~~ right?♪ If they bite once, they run away♪ Think about it well♪”
The King let out a booming laugh. “Wahahaha!! That’s certainly true!!”
Brook strummed his ailing guitar. “We have nothing left to be taken anyway♫”
When the invasion finally came, it was swift and brutal.
“They’ve landed from the north port!! Twelfth platoon, head out!!” the King roared.
“Don’t let them land!!” a soldier shouted. “We didn’t hear there would be this many!!”
Amidst the chaos of battle, Brook fought fiercely, his song turning into a battle cry. “Leave me alooooooone♫ Leave me alooooooone♫”
“Commander!! The enemy has reached the palace!!” a soldier screamed.
Shuri drew her weapon. “Why can’t I fight!?”
“Block the stairs, I’ll go!!” Brook yelled, rushing forward.
The Commander tried to stop him. “Don’t be unreasonable!! If you get caught, we won’t be able to make a move!! Don’t do anything rash, Princess Shuri!! It’s the guards!!”
Brook fought his way through the familiar halls, his heart breaking as he saw the destruction. “Ah… Princess Shuri… The garden we often walked in is… Like in the record of the nation’s founding♪” He panted heavily. “Haa… Haa… But there’s a name that won’t disappear♫”
Flames licked at the walls. “It’s burning… The garbage disposal area where I played with you is burning well…” He slashed through enemies, muttering to himself. “Ah, King… 『This place won’t be easy』 『To take from♫』“
His song grew frantic and furious. “Leave me alone♫ Leave me alone♫ The edge of the map starts to shine♪ If I get seriously angry♪ You’ll be shocked and tremble♫ King!! Princess Shuri!!”
Brook finally burst into the ruined throne room, freezing in pure horror at the sight before him. The King and Candel lay defeated and dead amongst the rubble of their kingdom.
From the shadows, an unknown enemy stepped forward, looking down at the devastation.
“The war is going to end, you know? …Brook.” The enemy’s voice was chillingly calm. “You’re happy, right?”
