Square Enix has offered its clearest indication yet that Octopath Traveler 3 is on the horizon, even though the RPG has not been officially announced. During a recent developer interview, series producer Tomoya Asano acknowledged the growing anticipation surrounding the next entry, while emphasizing that the team is aware of the high expectations from fans.
The comments came as the Octopath Traveler franchise continues to build momentum after surpassing 7 million copies sold worldwide. The series debuted in 2018 and has since expanded with Octopath Traveler II, Octopath Traveler 0, and the mobile title Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.

Speaking with Dengeki, Asano reflected on the success of the franchise and its signature HD-2D visual style, which has become one of Square Enix’s defining technologies. He said,
“Octopath Traveler has also reached its eighth anniversary, and we are now looking ahead to its tenth anniversary. I am well aware that expectations for 3 are the highest, but… I feel a little sorry that I can’t say anything at the moment.”
Asano later reiterated that the series remains the company’s primary focus, adding,
“The series has reached a scale of 7 million copies sold, and I am keenly aware of the high hurdles to overcome for 3… I will do my best to live up to them.”
Although Square Enix stopped short of announcing the sequel, the producer’s remarks strongly suggest that development is progressing behind the scenes. In the meantime, Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are also making their way to Nintendo Switch 2, giving new players another opportunity to experience the acclaimed HD-2D RPG series.
