Furukawa discusses Nintendo's business strategy and commitment to developing unique entertainment experiences.

Nintendo has no intention of abandoning its pursuit of new forms of gameplay, even as the company moves forward with the Nintendo Switch 2. President Shuntaro Furukawa has reaffirmed that creating distinctive entertainment remains a central part of Nintendo’s business strategy, dismissing suggestions that the company has become less interested in hardware-driven innovation.

The comments came during Nintendo’s November 2026 financial results Q&A session. Furukawa was asked whether developing new ways to play still receives the same management priority, particularly considering that Nintendo has not introduced a hardware innovation as transformative as the original Wii in recent years.

His response made the company’s position clear. Nintendo still considers experimental gameplay and the combination of hardware and software development essential to its identity.

Nintendo’s Hardware and Software Teams Will Continue Working Together

Furukawa explained that Nintendo’s approach to innovation has remained consistent for approximately four decades. Rather than relying exclusively on powerful hardware or technological advancements, the company believes its strongest ideas emerge when hardware and software are developed together.

He described this philosophy as the foundation of Nintendo’s ability to deliver experiences that competitors cannot easily replicate. Although the company could explore different approaches to entertainment in the future, Furukawa believes its integrated development strategy currently makes the best use of its strengths.

He stated,

“Providing unique entertainment—the kind only Nintendo can offer—is our company’s lifeblood.”

The discussion also included comments from Shinya Takahashi, who explained how Nintendo approaches new gameplay concepts. According to Takahashi, developers do not begin by looking for ways to use new hardware features. Instead, they first identify an entertaining gameplay idea before deciding which technological capabilities are necessary to make it possible.

Importantly, Takahashi confirmed that Nintendo is already experimenting with new gameplay experiences for Nintendo Switch 2. He said the development teams are going through a process of trial and error and asked fans to look forward to the eventual announcement.

Nintendo’s Innovation Strategy Remains Unchanged

Nintendo executive Ko Shiota also emphasized that collaboration between hardware and software developers has been part of the company’s development culture for years.

He acknowledged that countless experimental ideas never become commercial products. However, Nintendo considers investing in these experiments essential because even unsuccessful concepts can contribute to discovering new forms of entertainment.

Shiota added that the company’s management remains committed to supporting developers as they explore fresh possibilities.

These comments suggest that Nintendo Switch 2’s future could involve gameplay experiences that go beyond simply improving graphical performance or processing power. However, Nintendo has not revealed any specific upcoming hardware features or experimental projects.

For now, the company is keeping its plans under wraps while continuing to explore what its latest console can offer.
