Nick Tramontin, a participant in The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On season 3, shared his regrets about his behavior during the show. Reflecting on his actions, Nick admitted that he didn’t handle himself as well as he hoped, particularly about his drinking habits. In an interview with The Viall Files podcast, he revealed that he wished he had focused more on hydrating and less on consuming alcohol.
Nick explained that his struggles went beyond just drinking, noting that he wasn’t sleeping well and had trouble coping with being in his apartment. The stress and emotional strain built up over time, leading him to become emotionally volatile, something he felt was not aligned with the person he wanted to be for someone he cared about.
Before appearing on the show, Nick and his ex-girlfriend Sandy Gallagher, aged 28, had an on-and-off relationship for nine months. On The Ultimatum, couples face a tough choice: either get engaged or call it quits. This is complicated by the trial marriage phase, where each partner temporarily switches to a new partner for three weeks. Nick was paired with Mariah Zernik, but she left early to reunite with her now-fiancé Caleb Lefterys, leaving Nick alone for the remainder of the trial.
Nick reflected on the challenge of watching his actions unfold on television. He admitted that his drinking and substance abuse had been recurring struggles in his life. This became clear to him during the experiment, where he realized he had to address these issues head-on. His struggles with alcohol had been present before the show, often flaring up when he felt things were under control, only to slip back into unhealthy habits.
Nick also admitted that he wasn’t receiving the necessary mental health support during the filming of the show, which contributed to his drinking habits as a way to escape from difficult emotions and life situations. In retrospect, he recognized that he was in a bad mental place, a fact that was evident to anyone watching.
Following the end of the experiment and his breakup with Sandy, Nick sought professional help to change his drinking habits. He revealed that he hadn’t initially recognized the severity of his need for assistance. Alcohol was a socially accepted part of the show, making it harder for him to see his problematic patterns.
Nick also acknowledged the consistent support Sandy provided throughout their relationship, especially regarding his sobriety. Despite their frustrations and the breakup, he praised Sandy for always being there to help him improve his situation. Sandy, in turn, admitted that Nick’s substance abuse was challenging but emphasized her commitment to being there for him during his struggles.
Despite their breakup, both Nick and Sandy maintain a friendly relationship and are on good terms. Nick has also moved on and is dating again, mentioning that his current relationship is much more aligned with his values than his past one with Sandy.
