A new Nintendo Switch 2 rumor has put two very different Nintendo franchises back in the spotlight. According to the YouTube account malo932, Nintendo is reportedly working on a completely new Super Smash Bros. game, while another cryptic comment appears to tease the return of Nintendogs.
Neither project has been officially announced by Nintendo, so both claims should be treated as rumors for now. However, the timing has attracted attention because Nintendo has officially scheduled a Nintendo Direct for September 9, 2026, following a separate Zelda 40th Anniversary presentation on September 8.
New Smash Bros. Game Could Be More Than a Switch 2 Upgrade
The most straightforward part of the rumor is the claim that a new Super Smash Bros. game is in development. Malo932 reportedly responded to a question about whether Nintendo was preparing a Switch 2 edition of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by stating,
“No, a new Smash is in the works.”
That distinction is significant because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is already playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s official store currently lists the game as supported on the newer console, meaning the rumor points toward a potential successor rather than simply bringing Ultimate to the hardware.
The claim would also represent the next major entry in Nintendo’s crossover fighting franchise following Ultimate, which originally launched for Nintendo Switch in 2018. For now, there is no release window, roster information, or indication of which developer could be handling the project.
Nintendogs May Also Be Returning
The more surprising rumor involves Nintendogs, Nintendo’s pet simulation series that originally debuted on Nintendo DS in 2005. Nintendo’s official description highlights its touchscreen and microphone-based interactions, allowing players to care for, train, walk and play with virtual puppies.
Malo932 did not directly name Nintendogs, but reportedly teased that a “forgotten” Nintendo series could be returning with references to barking and “woof woof.” That has led fans to interpret the comment as a hint toward a new Nintendogs game.
The timing makes the rumors particularly interesting, but there is currently no confirmation from Nintendo that either game exists. With the September 9 Nintendo Direct officially confirmed to focus on games coming to Switch 2 this winter, fans will likely be watching closely for any surprise announcements.
