The depth of the ocean, dense forests, and limitless sky make us curious to question the existence of mermaids, Titanoboa, and aliens. The scope is so wide that vampires have started to feel lowkey real.
The possibility and question remain, with science and mythology clashing every now and then. In this quest to find answers, we sometimes find abode in the comfort cushion the entertainment industry has created.
Our obsession with vampires has brought numerous projects, big and small, taking us to this other side of the world. Be it The Vampire Diaries or Twilight, the craze, and success haven’t faded a bit.
Looking at the increasing demand and area to explore, the South Korean Drama My Heart is Beating, better known as Heartbeat, has arrived with its own tale to tell. This 16-episode Kdrama series aired on 26th June with the release of its first episode.
It is a tale about a half vampire half human, Seon Woo Hyul (Ok Taec Yeon), who misses his mark to turn completely into a human by one day difference over a hundred years. Despite his reality, he yearns to be a human. On the other side is our female lead Joo In Hae(Won Ji An), who is a human, but according to others, she is too heartless to be called one.
Joo in Hae works as a school nurse to support her shrinking finances. Circumstances force the two to live under a common roof and feel the warmth of love.
My Heart is Beating Episode 1: Recap
The episode begins with Seon Woo Hyul running in the woods with his lover. Humans are thirsty for the blood of immortal beings(vampires) so they chase Seon Woo. While he fights them, his lover sacrifices her life to save him, and looking at her blood he loses control.
Now, another parallel story of the present begins where Seon Woo and his vampire group have gone past 130 years. He asks them to organize a memorial ceremony for him as he gets ready for a hundred-year sleep inside a hawthorn coffin. But why? That is what his friends ask.
The explanation is given later in the episode in the form of another mini-story in which a 1000-year-old cat told him that this would help him turn into a human. Why a human?
This question is answered with a backdrop story of how his lover described the heart-thumping feeling of love and him being a vampire never felt a heartbeat. So he wants to experience it once.
Through and through, a funny side of vampires is portrayed rather than a fearsome one. They can fly but don’t, to blend in with humans, they don’t suck the blood of living humans, and how much they hate the sun. Seon Woo is the heartthrob of the town but cannot see himself.
Now, after entering the coffin and assigning his favorite human Buttler Joo the duty to keep his house safe, the story follows a leap.
We are introduced to Joo In Hae, a tough girl. Her day at school begins on a quarrelsome note and later she is rendered homeless. With low hopes, she receives a phone call about her father’s will. Within moments, she becomes the owner of an ancestral mansion.
On introspecting it, she finds a coffin and opens it, waking up Seon Woo just one day before completing 100 years of sleep. Angry Seon decides to bite her to punish her but she bites him instead. Not the ideal romantic meet but who would want it otherwise? The episode ends with this funny encounter.
