Disney has released the official trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the prequel to the 2019 live-action version of “The Lion King.”
This trailer, which was shown at D23, introduces the beginnings of Mufasa, played by Aaron Pierre. Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 film, has handed over the project to Barry Jenkins, known for directing “Moonlight.”
The trailer builds on the teaser released in April. In it, Rafiki (John Kani) tells Mufasa’s story to his granddaughter, Kiara, played by Blue Ivy Carter. Kiara is joined by Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) as they explore how Mufasa became the king of Pride Rock.
The new footage also shows Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé Knowles Carter) in the present day and includes scenes beyond the Pride Lands. The movie will be released this Christmas.
What Else Can We Expect From ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’?
Like “The Godfather Part II,” “Mufasa: The Lion King” will cover both past and present events. Kelvin Harrison Jr. will play Taka, also known as Scar, Mufasa’s younger brother. The film will explore Mufasa’s rise to power and Scar’s villainous origin.
Alongside Harrison Jr., Thandiwe Newton, Mads Mikkelsen, and Keith David are among the new cast members lending their voices to CG animals. Tiffany Boone will replace Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, Mufasa’s queen. This suggests that the film will also show how Mufasa and Sarabi met and fell in love.
Like the previous film, “Mufasa: The Lion King” will feature music. Lin-Manuel Miranda has written original songs for the movie. Miranda has previously worked with Disney on “The Little Mermaid,” “Moana,” “Encanto,” and “Mary Poppins Returns.”
“Mufasa: The Lion King” will hit theaters on December 20th. Stay tuned to Otakukart for more updates.
