Monster Hunter Wilds Executive Director Says Ascendance Won’t Add a 15th Weapon Because CAPCOM Couldn’t Find One With a Unique Playstyle

Kaname Fujioka explains why CAPCOM is focusing on improving the existing 14 weapon types, while Ascendance will introduce new combat actions and free updates for all Wilds players.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will not introduce a 15th weapon type, as CAPCOM has yet to find a design that offers a sufficiently distinct playstyle from the existing options. Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka discussed the decision during an interview with Wccftech at Tokyo Game Show 2026, explaining why the development team is prioritizing improvements to the current arsenal instead.

Fujioka said CAPCOM considers introducing new weapon types during development of every mainline entry. However, the team must determine whether a proposed weapon brings something genuinely new rather than duplicating the mechanics of an existing option.

“We think about new weapon types every single time, not just this time,”

Fujioka explained in the Wccftech interview. He added that a new weapon needs to offer a sufficiently different experience to justify its inclusion and attract players.

The decision does not mean CAPCOM has permanently ruled out new weapon types. Instead, the team believes the existing 14 weapons provide a better foundation for Ascendance while it continues looking for ideas that meet its design standards.

MONSTER HUNTER WILDS: ASCENDANCE WILL IMPROVE EXISTING WEAPONS INSTEAD

Rather than expanding the roster, CAPCOM is developing new actions and adjustments for the existing weapons. Director Takuro Hiraoka confirmed that some weapons will receive adjustments, while others will gain new moves. Sword and Shield, for example, will receive a new technique.

The expansion will also introduce the Boost Bracer, a mechanic designed to enhance each weapon’s combat identity. Hunters can build energy by attacking monsters and activate Boost to strengthen certain moves, unlock additional actions, and create opportunities to attack.

According to CAPCOM’s official PlayStation Blog announcement, the Boost Bracer will expand the capabilities of all 14 weapon types. The feature is intended to build on their existing strengths rather than replace their individual playstyles.

Importantly, players will not need to purchase Ascendance to receive every improvement. Fujioka confirmed that weapon adjustments and new actions will arrive in a free update for Monster Hunter Wilds when the expansion launches.

Other improvements, including a revamped user interface and the ability to change weapons without mounting a Seikret, will also be available to base-game owners. However, the new Master Rank content and Boost Bracer will require purchasing the expansion.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is scheduled to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CAPCOM is also bringing Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2, with the expansion planned for that platform following the base game’s release.
