Veteran anime director Yūji Yanase has died at the age of 59. MAHO FILM officially confirmed the news on September 2, stating that Yanase passed away from myocardial infarction on August 22, 2026.
The announcement came while two television anime he directed were still airing during the Summer 2026 season. Yanase served as director of The World’s Strongest Rearguard and The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne, making his death particularly significant for the teams currently working on both productions.

Yanase was affiliated with MAHO FILM, where he had been involved since the studio’s early days and became a company employee in 2023. According to the studio’s official statement, his family held a private funeral attended only by close relatives.
MAHO FILM described Yanase’s contribution to the company with gratitude, while the production committees behind his two ongoing series also issued tributes. The World’s Strongest Rearguard team praised him for leading the production with passion and a warm personality, according to Crunchyroll News.
Yanase’s career stretched across numerous anime productions, initially working as an animator and animation director before moving into episode direction and series directing. His credits include Saber Marionette J, Hellsing, Chobits, Saint Seiya Omega, In Another World With My Smartphone, In the Land of Leadale, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 and I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History.
His work also included involvement with the influential 1988 anime film Akira, further highlighting the breadth of his career across multiple generations of Japanese animation.
