Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is shaping up to be much more than a traditional expansion. Capcom has confirmed that the 2027 expansion will continue the story of Monster Hunter Wilds while finally exploring parts of its world and history that the original campaign could only establish. In a recent interview, Capcom Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka explained that the base game deliberately presented the Forbidden Lands through Nata’s perspective, leaving larger questions about the region’s origins and ecosystem unanswered.

That makes Elder Dragons and their influence on the ecosystem one of the central themes of Ascendance. The expansion will also introduce the Skybound Eyrie, new monsters, Master Rank quests and additional combat mechanics when it launches in 2027. Capcom has confirmed releases for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also in development.

Ascendance Will Finally Dig Into Wilds’ Untold History

Speaking with Postmode, Fujioka explained why Wilds did not explore the deeper history of its setting during the original campaign.

“We never really got a chance to look at, ‘Well, what is this place, and why is it like this, and what’s the background history of the ecosystem that made this land the way it is?’”

According to Fujioka, Wilds focused on Nata’s personal journey and the immediate mysteries surrounding the Forbidden Lands. That approach meant the developers established the setting without fully explaining its ancient history, the evolution of its ecosystem or why certain phenomena occur.

Ascendance is designed to go further. Fujioka said the expansion will examine why Elder Dragons appear, how they affect ecosystems and why the Forbidden Lands are undergoing major changes.

This also ties into the return of Wyveria and the mysterious Guardian creatures introduced in Wilds. The expansion’s story will give players an opportunity to understand more about the relationship between humans, artificially created life and the natural world.

Elder Dragons Become Central to the New Story

Capcom has already confirmed several Elder Dragons for Ascendance. The expansion’s story begins with the arrival of Lao-Shan Lung, whose appearance causes widespread destruction and triggers ecological changes throughout the Forbidden Lands. The Expedition eventually establishes the Madoi Stronghold as it prepares for the Elder Dragon’s return.

The resulting disturbances include the expansion of Guardian monster habitats and the emergence of additional Elder Dragons. A newly revealed Elder Dragon, Gundoraja, can manipulate storm clouds and appears in the new Skybound Eyrie region. Returning Elder Dragons such as Teostra will also challenge hunters.

The expansion therefore uses its new monsters and locations to investigate a broader question: what happens to an ecosystem when creatures with extraordinary abilities enter it?

A New Skybound Region and Tougher Hunts

The Skybound Eyrie is a major new location suspended high above the clouds after the mist surrounding Wyveria clears. It contains ancient ruins, new endemic life and a vertical environment designed around aerial traversal.

Hunters can use their Seikret to glide between updrafts, adding another dimension to exploration. The expansion also introduces Araketa, a fast-moving Bird Wyvern that hunts in packs, while the playable Tokyo Game Show build featured hunts against Araketa and Teostra.

Combat is also being expanded through the Boost Bracer, which enables temporary enhanced attacks and weapon-specific abilities. Capcom says the system builds upon the positive reception to Wilds’ action mechanics while giving experienced hunters additional opportunities to create openings and deal heavy damage.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is currently scheduled for 2027, and Capcom recently confirmed that the expansion won a Future Division award at the Japan Game Awards 2026 following strong interest from players at Tokyo Game Show.
