MONSTA X Members Profile: A Brief Introduction To The Kpop Group

Monsta X is a South Korean Pop Boy Group under the label Starship Entertainment. The group debuted in May 2015. The group currently has 6 members Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, and I.M ( Wonho left the group in October 2019). Monsta X is also under a US label Maverick Agency from February 2019.  The group was formed through a survival reality program.

Recently Wonho( aka Lee Ho-Seok) left the group because of some controversies related to drug abuse while younger, which emerged on Social Media. With Wonho gone, there are 6 members left in the group. Let us known them.

Monsta X Member Profile: Shownu

Shownu (셔누)is the lead vocalist, main dancer, and leader of Monsta X. His birth name is Sohn Hyun Woo (손현우) as Shownu is his stage name. He was born on June 18, 1992, and therefore his zodiac sign is Gemini. He was born Changdong, Donbonggu, Seoul, South Korea as the only child to his family. He has no other sibling. He was initially a trainee at JYP entertainment. He won first place in 2009 auditions of the same. He was praised because of his great dancing skills but he could not continue with JYP Entertainment for more than 2 years.

Initially, Shownu was supposed to debut with GOT 7 but according to sources he had to leave because of training absences. He reported feelings of stagnation and conflicts with the company. Shownu continued to work within the idol industry and he performed as a backup dancer with Lee Hyori in her videos “Bad Girls,” “Going Crazy” “U-Go-Girl”.

Finally, he auditioned at Starship Entertainment and got into the NUBOYZ project paving his path towards becoming a Monsta X member. He was part of the NUBOYZ project along with other future Monsta X members. In December 2014, Shownu participated in Mnet’s survival show “No Mercy” alongside all the six Monsta X members. Therefore, after that, all the seven contestants debuted as Monsta X under Starship Entertainment.

Shownu participates in most of the Monsta X choreographies. Ever since debuting as the leader and lead dancer and vocalist,  he participated as a solo participant in various variety shows. He was a regular cast member of Lipstick Prince for two seasons straight which got him a television commercial after winning the show. He participated in more variety and reality shows. He also has uploaded a lot of choreography for songs of famous singers such as Ariana Grande, Charli Puth, Weeknd, and more.

Shownu has faced a lot of injuries and surgeries but still, he continues to perform flawlessly even today. In November 2020 he was a judge at a Mnet show. In March 2021, Shownu is supposed to star in a Netflix show called Goedam 2.

Monsta X Member Profile: Minhyuk

Minhyuk ( aka Lee Min Hyuk -이민혁) is the sub vocalist and the visual of Monsta X. He was born on  November 3, 1993, in  Gwangju, South Korea. He has a sibling, an elder brother. He participated in Mnet’s survival show, No Mercy in 2014, and thus that helped him to become a part of Monsta X. He was the last member who was confirmed to be a part of the group.

He is the most energetic, sociable member of the group. He tries to keep other members happy. He is the visual of the group and he has admitted that he is most confident about his lips.

He debuted in Monsta X with their first album Trespass. Their first studio album was released in The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter. Monsta X also made Japanese music and their Japanese debut was in 2018. The group also released their English album which came out in 2020.

He also worked as a solo artist and he released a mixtape single, “옹심이” (“Ongsimi”) in January 2019. The mixtape was released on the Youtube Channel of Starship Entertainment. He also worked as an emcee at SBS Inkigayo alongside Naeun of April and Jaehyun of NCT in 2019 and 2020. The show aired every Sunday.

Lee is credited for writing three tracks of Monsta X’s sixth album All About Luv.

Monsta X Member Profile: KiHyun

Yoo Ki-hyun (유기현 aka Kihyun) born November 22, 1993 in Goyang, South Korea. He is the best vocalist of Monsta X. He has an older brother who lives in Japan. He is known to graduate from Dong’Ah Institute of Media and Arts. He takes part in composing songs and writing lyrics. While he was part of Mnet’s survival show, No mercy he created a single with Sistar’s Soyou & Giri boy titled “Pillow”. Kihyun and Jooheon of Monsta X recorded a television soundtrack titled “Attractive Woman” for KBS2’s Orange Marmalade in May 2015. He also released a solo track for television in 2017. KiHyun recorded original soundtracks for dramas such as What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Partners of Justice, Suspicious Partner, and more. He participated in writing songs in the album “All About Luv”.

Monsta X Member Profile: Hyungwon

Chae Hyung-won (Korean: 채형원, aka Hyungwon)was born on January 15, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea. He is also a DJ under the stage name DJ H.ONE. Before debuting with Monsta X, he worked as a fashion model with various renowned companies in South Korea.

Hyungwon appeared in K.Will’s music video, “You Call It Romance” in 2016 and gained much praise for his performance.  In 2017, Hungwon made his acting debut in a KBS2 show called “Please Find Her”.

Hyungwon started out as a DJ, with DJ H.ONE as his stage name. His first single was in collaboration with DJ Justin Oh which also featured Jooheon from Monsta X.  The work was titled “BAM!BAM!BAM!”This was followed by many more collaborations.

In 2020, Hyungwon focused on writing and composing songs. He contributed towards creating the song “Nobody Else” for Monsta X’s Album.

Monsta X Member Profile: JooHoney

Joohoney is also known as DJ H.ONE

Lee Joo-Heon (Korean: 이주헌; also known as JooHeon and his stage name is Joohoney) was born on October 6, 1994. He is the rapper and the songwriter in the K-pop group Monsta X.

Joohoney was part of a project group called Nu Boyz before debuting with Monsta X. Nu Boyz program was organized by Starship Entertainment. He was the best rapper amongst all the trainees of Starship. He uploaded multiple mixtapes on Starship Entertainment’s Youtube channel. He performed at the opening show for the Starship X concert in December 2014

He released a  track called Coach Me”, in which he collaborated with San E and Sistar’s Hyolyn.Joohoney and Kihyun also participated in the recording of the original soundtrack for the drama Orange Marmalade. He was one of the youngest producers of JTBC’s Hip-hop competition in 2016. He also released a solo music video in 2016 called “Rhythm”. He changes his name Jooheon to JooHoney in 2019 for his English song-making activities.

JooHoney took a break from Monsta X in 2020 to focus on his mental health. He was back to promote Monsta X’s Korean album Fantasia X.

Monsta X Member Profile: I.M

I.M is another rapper, singer, and songwriter of Monsta X. His birth name is Im Chang-Kyun (Korean: 임창균). He was born on October 6, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea. However, he lived in Boston and Israel for a significant period of time. His father was a scientist at the Harvard University and thus he is very fluent in English.

I.M was a part of the boy band Nu’bility, with the label Special K Entertainment in 2013 and 2014 consecutively. Though the group held many events and activities, Nu’bility never officially debuted. He also participated in the survival show No Mercy. He was added to Monsta X under Starship Entertainment quite late as compared to his fellow members.

Alongside producing albums for Monsta X as mentioned earlier, he released his first mixtape in 2016. The songs were uploaded to the Youtube Channel of Starship Entertainment and it features Yeseo. It was titled ” Who am I?”. He also released another mistake with the lead single “Horizon” featuring  ELHAE. “Scent” was released as the B-side of the same.

He also narrated audiobooks in Naver Audio clip one of which was Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince. He again collaborated with ELHAE in 2020 to release the single “Need To Know”. He has been working on his solo endeavors and promised to release songs in 2021. His mixtape is supposed to be an extended play titled “Duality”.
